Doonesbury Creator Starts Military Blog October 12, 2006

It sounds weird, but I’m actually OK with this. Yeah, Garry Trudeau is an old-school liberal, but he’s still funny as hell, and he might accomplish something good with this.
NEW YORK - Though often bitterly critical of the war on Iraq in his comic strip “Doonesbury,” creator Garry Trudeau now is offering readers a chance to get a closer, mostly unfiltered view of troops’ experiences in their own words.
“The Sandbox,” a new addition to his Doonesbury Web site, lets viewers read the comments of service members. It’s a version of a military blog — one of many that already are available on the Web.
If Garry can provide a forum for our military men and women to speak out in their own words, and give them exposure that they might not achieve at other military blogs, then I say God bless him.
“This is GWOT-lit’s forward position, offering those in-country a chance to share their experiences and reflections with the rest of us,” Trudeau writes, using an acronym for the “Global War on Terror.”
He wrote that he hopes to let readers see “the unclassified details of deployment — the everyday, the extraordinary, the wonderful, the messed-up, the absurd.” He said the postings will be “lightly edited.”
Recent postings came from an injured soldier who, while on leave in the states, met the crew chief who evacuated him; a sailor stationed in Afghanistan who complained that most Americans “look at this war as little more than a television event”; and a soldier on leave who was slipped a $100 bill by a passer-by (the soldier tried to give it back and wrote that she plans to donate the money to the Army Emergency Relief Fund).
Yeah. And I hear ce*arf*rd is starting a blog for Zionists. That should be good too.
I call bullshit.
Michael, you are a
good, smart and funny manlecherous pathetic moron. But Turdeau is up to no good, bet on it.(I just noticed that I spelled the cartoonist’s name wrong, but I’m going to leave it — it fits)

Military servicemembers share their stories every day, whether they are combat vets, or just service vets. What he is doing is he is preparing everyone to listen to the “muzzled” voices of servicemembers who disagree with the mission.
Note: Most of the loudmouths? Aren’t active, or were never active, they are guard or reserve (not that there is anything wrong with that) Not that most of those who bitch daily about being injured (as they should) but blame bush (as they shouldn’t) are not active, they are guard or reserve (not that there is anything wrong with that) and not that they are also grotesquely and insanely liberal, and angry that they had to go to war, though it’s expressely stated in their contract, but they never thought it would happen cuz they are guard are reserve(not that there is anything wrong with that)
I would say right now, that though less than 1/3 of total service were guard or reserve (though there is nothing wrong with that) the repeat service are either actives, or volunteer reserves who have applied for active, and guards who do the same, but can’t be accepted because congress refuses to expand the military.
I don’t blame the guard or reservists (there is nothing wrong with that) but I do blame the congress for not expanding the military force, there IS something wrong with that.
But “Turdeau” passes the Site Administrator’s test!
WP it galls me to see service members saying things like “I only joined to get money for college. Now they’re sending me to war!” “Whine whine, sniffle”
Yeah, dumbass, what did you think you signed up for?
Lipstick,
I volunteered for every mobilization, I was a geek Marine, but part of the reason I am so “When I was in the Marine Corps” kinda a guy, is because I spent 4 years busting my ass to do my job. I didn’t want the college funds, I had at least 2 years of college paid for, and I LEFT college to join.
Whenever I would hear “I didn’t sign up for this” I would go all DI, even when I was a court-martialed cpl/pvt/cpl, and I would say “THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU JOINED! NO SUCK IT UP!” (I’m rather persuasive when I yell, I’m kinda tall, and VERY VERY VERY loud. when the need arises.)
OH! I skipped it, anyways, the reason I’m a “When I was in the Marine Corps” kinda guy, is cuz I never got to go to war. My job wasn’t to fix broken circuit cards, my job was to make war on an enemy. I didn’t WANT to kill another human being, I wanted to KNOW for myself, if I could do the job I took so much pride in. I never got that opportunity.
I can’t say if I would be a hero, a coward, or just one more wageslave in uniform, and because I can’t say? I regret my lack of action in service.
Imagine spending 7 years or more to become a medical doctor, and then spending the rest of your life as an insurance analyst? All the while wishing that you were a medical doctor. Thats who I am, I spent 23 years being born, raised, trained, and educated in the importance of civil service and I never got to serve in the proper way. All I was, was a half assed accademic of civil service.
I’m a half-man, thats why I have these crazy tirades, and these violently intolerant assaults on those who don’t understand when I comment on the various blogs.
The Very thing that I think I am, I am no longer anymore, and I was never allowed to be it to begin with. THAT, more than any other reason is why I hate Clinton.
Oh geeze, it must have been excruciating to be in the service, let alone a Marine, under Clinton.
I’m a half-man, thats why I have these crazy tirades, and these violently intolerant assaults on those who don’t understand when I comment on the various blogs.
See, WP, it’s those expressions of totally unrestrained self-disclosure that make you charming. We all wonder if you are on drugs or just a whack-job, as I have proposed.
Either way, you sort of have a home here for your tirades. Everybody likes you. We all know how to scroll through the longer tirades.
What people like about Innocent Bystanders is that it is basically a clique, but it’s a clique that anyone can join if you are funny, tolerant, and willing to share a little bit about yourself.
Thanks Michael,
Though I think that my last was more “expressive, and self depricatory” than “drugged up” or “wacked-out”
I don’t come here when I’m torqued to the gills for exactly the reasons you state.
I respect the clicque, and the allowances I’ve been granted.
