Hookers Union Sues Amsterdam City Hall December 29, 2006

Posted by Michael in Ducks, Economics.
trackback

Mrs. Michael has relatives in Amsterdam, and we have heard about how the libertine Dutch attitude towards prostitution and drugs has made this wonderful city a magnet for organized crime in Europe, and one of the world capitals of sex tourism.

The merchandise is displayed so that customers can window shop.

Amsterdam Red Light District

Apparently, the city council has decided to scale back, and the prostitutes are fighting the move.

Brothel owners in Amsterdam’s red light district have taken the city council to court over its decision to close a number of sex businesses.

The council is demanding the closure of 33 brothels, which account for around a third of the district’s sex businesses, by the end of the year.

The prostitutes union says the move will force many women to work illegally.

But the attempts by the Dutch to be “open-minded” about sex have resulted in a seamy underside to the city of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam’s mayor, Job Cohen, claims that many sex businesses are fronts for criminal activity, such as women trafficking and money laundering.

But the prostitutes’ union, the Red Thread, which represents 20,000 prostitutes, argues that closing legal brothels will force many women onto the streets.

20,000!!!

Something is profoundly wrong with that.

I was stationed in Holland for seven years. If anyone needs directions to the red light district and the infamous Banana Bar just let me know.

There was a really good Mexican restaurant named El Pacifico very near the red light district too. Turn left to the restaurant or right to the window shopping.

And come on South Carolina, you’re screwing me if you don’t cover.

Union Whore. That just sounds right to me.

Am I the only thinking about Norm MacDonald’s character in “Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo”? Of course I am. I’m probably the only one that saw that movie, let alone thought there was anything remotely amusing about it.

5. lauraw - December 29, 2006

That whore is wearing white stockings.

In Winter. Well after Labor Day, I might add.

Tut-tut.
Tsk- I say, TSK!

When will these whores honor the traditional conventions of polite society?

That is IT,
I’m writing a letter.

Are you sure those are white? They look a little blue to me.

ba dum dumdum.

10. sandy burger - December 30, 2006

Holland’s attitude towards legalizing drugs and prostitution bugs me.

On drugs, they make end use legal, but trafficking is still illegal. And on prostitution, they make the transaction legal, but do almost nothing to prevent the exploitation of women (mostly from the third world).

They get the organized crime and exploitation that come with prohibition, along with the social ills of legalization. They choose the worst of both worlds.

Not surprisingly, I’m all in favor of legalizing marijuana and psychedelics here in the States, just as long as we don’t do it the Dutch way.

Please, Have any of you ever actually vistited the “city of inspiration”. If you did you would have witnessed a beautiful sea of tranquility among the people, places, and “hobbies” in the nederlands. If you walked around the RDL you would have seen that most of the women in the windows were not “third world.” Next time you want to make judgment, please do your research. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but, no one can create their own fact.

I have just returned from amsterdam and found it a truely peacful place everyone minding their own business, I endulged in all the pleasures of the free society and have never been so happy and relaxed! Baah Humbug to all you church goers who say its a bad place Amsterdam is Heaven on Earth!

Cohen is a motherfucker and has to die!!! This total piece of shit ha dno fucking idea what he is talking about! I live in Amsterdam, I was born and raised there. What the union says is right, if you close them windows these woman will be forces to go underground, meaning that they will be victim to more dark shit. Besides, it’s a good deal of our tourism you’re killing…alot of people come here, for one reasont o see the Red Lights. If ou close it, some manny less people will come here, and you are making less money. And I can go on for hours telling reasons why it’s totally worthless closing any brothel.

I notice some people have a problem woth our drugs policy. Well, before anyone goes on anout that, first tell me why The Netherland have, since 1970 or so, the less drugs addicts in the FUCKING WORLD! Yes, is HAS to do with our drugs policy you idiots!

78. Amsterdamrocks! - October 12, 2007

Oh, and let me add: Sandy Burger is a dick. God how can somebody be so stupid!

We pick the best there is. America is total shit man, meybe we ;legalize’ drugs (which we don’t) and meybe we legazile prostitutes (which we don’t) at least we don’t go and attack countries for no reason, torture people for no reason, and oh yeah, go and practically GIVE guns to children, which allows them to shoot up their schoolmates.

Wow, I love America! It’s so much better then Holland!

79. BrewFan - October 12, 2007

87. AmsterdamForTheMasses - November 9, 2007

I visited Amsterdam twice. I totally love it and am thinking of moving there. Fuck man, it really is my kind of place. I don’t know if it would be the same living there or if it is just my ideal holiday destination. The place is tranquill; people mind their own business. Even the scum don’t really bother you. Guy comes up to you when ur minding ur own business and is all like “want some charlie!?!?”. And if u all like ignore him and shit they just walk away. Awesome! And the sluts!? Third world my ass! Rio is the next stop for me then back to the states and vegas. man it’s great to be an american with money

104. AmsterDame - March 8, 2008

Honestly? I don’t see what the problem is. Every country will have problems with other countries, because they weren’t born there. They haven’t lived it. And I’m talking all countries, not just America and whatnot.

I don’t see the problem with hookers. If that’s what they want to do, and they’re happy, and healthy, who cares? As long as no one is getting hurt.

105. BrewFan - March 8, 2008

As long as no one is getting hurt.

That is the point you seem to be missing. They do get hurt. Legalizing prostitution doesn’t make it any less degrading or dangerous for the women involved.

106. Zdollars - March 8, 2008

I’ve been to the a-dam twice and am going back in May. I’m pissed some French tourists are responsible for removing mushrooms from smart shops. The weed is world-class, as expected, but if you want to smoke a blunt bring it from the states; they don’t have them over seas. Try the volcano on some hash if the shop has one…it’s awesome. Go to Abraxas for the brownies and Barney’s for breakfast (during the week it’s not so crowded). There are always about 5-6 girls in the very center of the red light district that are knockouts but most of the girls are average or above average. Try the Blueberry weed at Noon near the art museums…the smell of that stuff will stick to your fingers all day!!!

107. Michael - March 8, 2008

Dang — there’s weed and hookers in a-dam.

I have wasted so many vacations.

108. TXMarko - March 8, 2008

Why on earth would anyone mix high quality weed with tobacco in a blunt?

I thought the whole idea of a blunt was concealability.

It would be like intentionally pouring Kahlua into a Martini.

Please explain.

114. geoff - May 1, 2008

It is well known that if you actually touch one of the ladies, your manbits will fall off. If they somehow survive, they will be confiscated by the police. If neither of those situations bother you, then there is absolutely no need to worry.

Have fun!!

122. Educated Person - June 20, 2008

Anyone who has been to Amsterdam will see the success of their pragmatic approach to society and law. Amsterdam does not prosecute most victimless crimes, but crime rates with victims and violent crimes are much lower than those in the US. Plus their universal healthcare is far superior to our substandard healthcare system. so if you’ve never been, but are talking down on Amsterdam shut the —- up.

123. Muslihoon - June 20, 2008

Yeah. And how many people has Amsterdam? And how many The United States?

You cannot compare apples with oranges. I am always quite displeased when people point out European lax laws and socialized healthcare. They don’t have even a fraction of the population the US has. (Okay, well, technically they do. Stop ruining my point.) Such policies would be unwieldly, impractical, and impossible in the US.

Of course, this is ignoring the fact that currently Europe is suffering because of its laws and policies.

124. compos mentis - June 20, 2008
