I think they are guessing. Suction isn’t very effective in land animals. How many do you see gathering food that way? We don’t even normally eat soups by suction. Gravity and the muscles of the mouth do it.
But getting food by filtering is used by a few animals, mostly aquatic.. They more or less have a mesh and extract small animals and plants from water.
