Africa Sucks February 15, 2008

A fully-equipped hospital that lay unused for two years has burned to the ground in northern Nigeria. The General Hospital in Maiduguri was built in 2006 but the state government refused to open it until the president came to cut the ribbon. Several surgical theatres, the intensive care ward, and the clinical section which held millions of dollars of equipment were all destroyed.

Jeez, Mr. President, go cut the dang ribbon!!!

His visit had been postponed several times. Since 20-frickin’-o6.

The president was due to visit the hospital next month to open it.

Africa is a big country.

It takes a long time to travel long distances while traveling on the backs of Elephants.

2. kevlarchick - February 15, 2008

A big country?

I hope you are being silly, Bart.

3. Sobek - February 15, 2008

They have fire in Africa? When did that happen?

4. lauraw - February 15, 2008

Is it bad to say that a whole continent is retarded? Is that wrong?

Seriously, though. Two years waiting for a fuckin’ ceremony before treating people.

Life is very cheap in some places. I have to think there was another reason besides the ribbon-cutting that they didn’t open the place. Like, maybe they ran out of money for actual doctors? I don’t know, I just made that up.

But the ribbon-cutting thing can’t be the real reason. It just can’t. Please. It can’t be that.

5. Muslihoon - February 15, 2008

Africa confuzzles me all the time. I never talk about my confuzzlement because it’s so un-PC.

I love learning about other places and cultures and countries, but Africa is a large, black hole on my mental globe.

6. Muslihoon - February 15, 2008

Silly Bart: they don’t use elephants. Those are Indians (the dot kind, not the feather ones).

Africans ride on giraffes.

lauraw: We should be sensitive to these people. Maybe they did not sacrifice the right color bird, or the waves were in the wrong zodiac, or the moon had yet to turn to blood. Or maybe somebody juju’ed the ribbon, y’know, to turn the president into an eye of newt.

I got it! A witch-doctor tried to turn the hospital into a newt but messed up and burnt it down! Competition and all that, y’know. Understandable mistake. Next time he should use water drawn from the sea under the full moon at low tide when Leo is in The Closet, rather than gasoline.

7. Muslihoon - February 15, 2008

Plus they probably measure time differently. Like how 2006 wasn’t two years ago like we see it but rather now is 2006 just as it was 2008 back then because time is a circle, never ending and never beginning, just turning and turning and turning, always the same, always now and then and later, so what’s the hurry…

Shoot. I have to finish my homework. Time’s running out!

8. Michael - February 15, 2008

I have to think there was another reason besides the ribbon-cutting that they didn’t open the place. Like, maybe they ran out of money for actual doctors?

More likely that tribal politics was involved.

9. Kowboy - February 15, 2008

More likely that tribal politics was involved.

I’ll agree with you on that Michael. My father worked at a local university as a maintenance man when I was a teenager. There were several African students, but they stayed in their own groups and would not associate with each other because they were from rival tribes. I found it quite odd that they had no trouble talking to me or my father, but another African was in their eyes the “enemy”. But if you look at the history of the continent, it’s pretty much always been embroiled in tribal warfare. The only major difference now is they have more powerful weapons.

10. Bart - February 15, 2008

Yeah, but India is part of Africa, so I’m still right.

BTW, I thought Kaddafi was the president of Africa?

11. eddiebear - February 15, 2008

^And the tribal warfare has spilled over into the modern nation states in Africa. How many post colonial countries were cobbled together by dipshits in Europe who didn’t know or care that they were putting two rival tribes in the same area and told to play nice after thousands of years of hate? And look at the results.

I also add the socialism of the region as another factor screwing everything up.

And what is REALLY scary is how sub-saharan Africa is becoming fertile ground for jihadi muslims. Many of the AlQaida fighters in Iraq now are from places like Somalia, Kenya, Sudan, Nigeria, Chad, etc.

12. eddiebear - February 15, 2008

i meant my “^” for #9

13. Sobek - February 15, 2008

A commenter on a liberal law blog I read seriously, without any irony whatsoever, just equated America with the worst human rights abusers in the world because of friggin belly slaps.

14. pajama momma - February 15, 2008

Like how 2006 wasn’t two years ago like we see it but rather now is 2006 just as it was 2008

Oh that’s just like North Florida. Everything that was cool and in style in California forever ago is just now getting here. I’m so glad banana clips are “out” in Florida this year. I’m predicting the new look is scrunchies.

15. Sobek - February 15, 2008

Oh, and he’s a future leader of this country, because no matter who wins in ‘08, we’ll get saddled with a massive amnesty that will dramatically skew U.S. demographics to the left, massive new entitlements that will train huge portions of the population to have no skills other than surviving off government programs, and two new Supreme Court Justices (at least) who will strike down voter ID laws to further perpetuate Democrat electoral victories.

Sometimes I wish I were a drinkin’ man.

16. Sobek - February 15, 2008

Oh, but at least I don’t live in Foriduh.

17. Bart - February 15, 2008

Re: #15

xenophobic bigot

Re: #16

midwestern/rocky mountain bigot

18. eddiebear - February 15, 2008

13:
A recently fired radio host on KMOX, the home of Limbaugh in STL, would routinely state that a belly slap was worse than what AQIZ does, because we started it (his words), and we needed to be better than the rest of the world. Needless to say, he was brought in to be the leftist counterpunch to Limbaugh.

Sadly, he was canned for budgetary reasons (KMOX is a cBS station, and the parent company called for cost cutting)

19. eddiebear - February 15, 2008

Damn. I forgot to finish before hitting “say it!”

I meant to finish by saying he was canned for budgetary reasons and not his liberal asshattery.

20. Cathy - February 15, 2008

You folk a fishin’ for trolls?

21. Michael - February 15, 2008

Yeah, but India is part of Africa, so I’m still right.

Close enough, Bart.

You crack me up so often.

I love you.

22. Cathy - February 15, 2008

I love you too, Bart.

23. lauraw - February 15, 2008

Yeah, but India is part of Africa, so I’m still right.

*Lookin’ at World Atlas*

*Scratchin’ head*

*shrugs*

24. lauraw - February 15, 2008

JINX!

25. lauraw - February 15, 2008

You owe me a coke

26. TXMarko - February 15, 2008

#15 Sobek – Sometimes I wish I were a drinkin’ man.

Never too late to start…..

27. Michael - February 15, 2008

You owe me a coke

Oh come on.

Bart is a pointy-headed East Coast Ivy League type. We all recognize that he actually knows where India is.

28. lauraw - February 15, 2008

YOU OWE ME A COKE.

29. eddiebear - February 15, 2008

Wait! You mean you have the newfangled maps and atlases?

Shiiiiiittt! I guess I need to go buy a new one.

30. Sobek - February 15, 2008

“We all recognize that he actually knows where India is.”

Duh. Right next to Illinois. Everyone knows that.

Laura, your comment at Ace’s about being sick of this planet? I totally hear ya. In America we are positively blessed that the moral equivalence is one of the most heart-breaking things I’ll have to deal with today. I just read a little blurb on Angola, how it has some of the richest mineral deposits in Africa, and how it is, as a result, a total crap hole (as opposed to all the African countries that are poorer than dirt and, as a result, total crap holes).

31. Bart - February 16, 2008

And I love me, too.

Wait.

Angola is where they make the sweaters, right?

32. Michael - February 16, 2008

Here’s the deal about Bart:

1. I read his comments.
2. I know his approximate age.
3. I know the institution that owns the server he uses to hit IB.

Long story short — Bart has a hard time acting dumb with me.

33. eddiebear - February 16, 2008

IIRC, Angola had one of the bloodiest Marxist inspired civil wars in the post colonial period in Africa. This discovery should cause even more chaos.

34. Muslihoon - February 16, 2008

Ah. So, Bart, when are you going to assassinate Al-Zawahiri?

35. lauraw - February 16, 2008

Michael, he works in the maintenance department, repairing wall ivy. I’m not saying the guy ain’t bright.

I’m just sayin.’

36. Dave in Texas - February 16, 2008

BART MICHAEL’S IN THE HOUSE!!!111 GETOUT, GET OUT NOW!! WTFWTFWTFW?!?!?!

37. Dave in Texas - February 16, 2008

Kim DuToit wrote a really good essay a few years ago on why Africa is dying, and why life is so cheap there. I’ll see if I can dig it up, it’s hard to find his old stuff.

38. Retired Geezer - February 16, 2008

The newer maps even have Idaho on them.

Yeah, Kim DuToit rocks.

39. Cathy - February 16, 2008

Folks here in Ohio think their state is shaped like a heart.

*looks at map… snigger*

40. Dr E Ross - October 22, 2008

I am just glad it cannot be blamed on Apartheid and add to our Apartheid guilt.
If anyone knows about a country in Sub-Saharan Africa that does more for its people than the Apartheid government did, in terms of providing schools, hospitals, universities, immunisation, homes, pensions, etc. please let me know.

41. eddiebear - October 22, 2008

^yeah, ignoring minor details like torture, forced poverty, routine intimidation, and legally enforced slavery. But other than that, game on!

42. Sobek - October 22, 2008

Have you guys heard how Mussolini made the trains run on time? Awesome!

43. dothead - November 3, 2008

forced poverty?

44. Wickedpinto - November 15, 2008

dumbnig mcafrica?

I wish you were were in arms reach.

45. lauraw - November 15, 2008

Can we get a cleanup in aisles 44 & 45, please?

46. Michael - November 15, 2008

^

Done.

For those of you who missed it, the current #44 and #45 refer to the most virulently racist comments I have ever seen in the internet.

47. Glenn Quagmeyer - November 19, 2008

Africa has been nothing but problems ever since it seperated from the pangea supercontinent.

48. Moonscar - November 21, 2008

Some of these comments seem ignorant and heartless to why people there are suffering. We could do a lot more to help Africa but all our money is unfortunately going to nuclear bombs…….

49. Justin Case - April 6, 2009

Africa does nothing except ask for others to solve its problems. (If you clean up someone’s mess, you will always clean up their mess.) The more we help them, the less they help themselves!!

50. IV - April 15, 2009

I think the best thing which can be done for Africa, is to let nature run its course…

51. Rick - May 1, 2009

Really religion is why Africa is screwed up? What about the rest of the world, we deal with religion as well. I could sit here and tell you why Africa is REALLY screwed up but then I would be violating all the PC rights that have been up so not to hurt their or anybody from there feelings, about the TURTH that is.

52. ATTENTION SITE ADMINISTRATOR - June 28, 2009

cleanup on aisle ^

Michael - June 28, 2009

Thanks, Laura.
