Shut Up and … Just Shut Up March 10, 2008

Laura Ingraham is dead to me. Dead. No links to her site will be put in this post. But if you want a flavor of what she said, here are some quotes from her show last Friday:

“All these years and I didn’t know there was a woman quarterback in the NFL.”

“That’s a great message for young boys. Get up there and act like a girl.”

“At some point I thought the authorities were gonna come take him away.”

“It was a non-stop blubber fest.”

“Brett Favre wanted to remind all of you that this was a sacrificial moment.”

“There’s just something unseemly about it.”

Here’s what I have to say to Ms. Ingraham: F* you and the horse you rode in on. Bitch.

Brew! You are not objective on this. Calm down, Cheesehead.

But she does need to lighten the fuck up.

2. daveintexas - March 10, 2008

When Bum Phillips cried I cringed.

When Brett cried I felt kinda sad.

Span of years… span of years. I got girls, you know they turn you into a big pile of mush. Boys and cars and college.

am I emoting?

3. TXMarko - March 10, 2008

Sounds like Ingraham is still pissed about the postings on AOSHQ.

4. Muslihoon - March 10, 2008

am I emoting?

That sounds…ominous.

5. Bart - March 10, 2008

Sorry, Brewf, but Laura Ingraham > You.

I love you dearly, but there’s no doubt on who, between the two of you, I dig more.

6. BrewFan - March 10, 2008

It’s funny that just the other day I was flipping through the channels and I saw her filling in for Bill O’Reilly and I thought, “her career must be on the down-slide”. Now I think it might just be that she is an asshat.

And yes, I may be just a wee bit biased.

7. annoying ex-pool guy - March 10, 2008

Aikman cried too when he retired. Personally, i wish they wouldn’t, but i’m not going to hold it against them.

8. BrewFan - March 10, 2008

Sorry, Brewf, but Laura Ingraham > You.

I wouldn’t let Laura Ingraham lick the sweat off of my balls if she was dying of thirst.

But to each their own.

9. eddiebear - March 10, 2008

^Tell us how you really feel.

10. daveintexas - March 10, 2008

yeah… they’re kids. That was the distinction I attempted.

At least there’s no crying in baseball.

11. Bart - March 10, 2008

ingraham > favre

btw, unless you’re eye-talyun or jooish, you’re not allowed to use “dead to me,” you midwestern slice of white bread.

12. Mrs. Peel - March 10, 2008

Rogers Hornsby called me a talking pile of pig shit in front of my parents who drove 100 miles to see me play! And did I cry? No! You know why? Because there’s no crying in baseball! NO CRYING!

(You guys know that Evelyn is played by the same chick who played Sharona, right?)

13. Michael - March 10, 2008

I did not cry when David Robinson retired.

I was eating onions.

14. daveintexas - March 10, 2008

oy gevalt!

15. BrewFan - March 10, 2008

btw, unless you’re eye-talyun or jooish, you’re not allowed to use “dead to me,” you midwestern slice of white bread.

Suck it, you bowl of new england clam chowder.

16. Steve - March 10, 2008

As a wiser man than I once said, “Lighten up, Francis.” It was a pretty unmanly display. He should have said his piece and left the stage. Laura Ingraham is occasionally over the top, but she nailed it on this one. We need less crybabies, not more.

17. nicedeb - March 10, 2008

I think I would need to see a video of the blubber fest to make an assessment.

18. annoying ex-pool guy - March 10, 2008

I think I would need to see a video of the blubber fest to make an assessment

Here it is.

19. annoying ex-pool guy - March 10, 2008

Just to add an obvious point to my earlier comment, while i wish they would remain composed, most of these guys lives have revolved around football since they were probably seven or eight years old. So it’s hard to fault them for breaking down when they’re facing the realization that life as they’ve always known it is coming to an end while they’re still at a relatively young age.

20. daveintexas - March 10, 2008

Unless he’s pissed they didn’t sign Moss.

Ok, pissed is the wrong word.

21. sandy burger - March 11, 2008

For me, it would be fine if she argued that people shouldn’t tear up at their retirement speeches. Agree or disagree, that’s at least a defensible opinion to hold. But why be a jerk about it?

22. BrewFan - March 11, 2008

Steve, you’ve got to be kidding. To mock somebody for displaying emotion, which was obviously genuine, is beneath contempt. At best she showed incredible immaturity and at worst she displayed a contempt for her fellow man that appears born of cynicism. I feel sorry for somebody who is that hard-hearted.

23. Dave in Texas - March 11, 2008

It’s not as much sadness on his part as it is gratitude for an overwhelming display of support and thanks from thousands and thousands of people (which was Ace’s best point yesterday when he linked this). Most of us have never experienced that kind of goodwill from so many people, most of whom we don’t even know. I probably got closest to that at my mother’s funeral, and by then it really wasn’t so much sadness at losing her as it was being amazed that so many people genuinely cared about me, and expressed it to me.

That’s tough, and yeah, emotional.

24. Mrs. Peel - March 11, 2008

Biggio got a little teary-eyed too. But it was what Dave said – he was responding to the loyalty of Astros fans.

25. daveintexas - March 11, 2008
26. Tim Oliver - March 11, 2008

Laura was right on regarding this.It is unbecoming for a grown man to cry IN FRONT OF ANYONE for ANY REASON.It’s called being a man.If you need to release your emotions, then do it in the privacy of your home. But to cry at your resignation speech.Come on,you fucking pansy.Reach down and give the boys a squeeze if you have to,but please,BUCK UP!

27. skinbad - March 11, 2008

Some guys get emotional. They can’t help it and don’t like it and try to control it. I’ve seen it and experienced it. And, like Dave said, it seems to happen to me more the older I get.

28. kevlarchick - March 11, 2008

True, Skinny. He was simply overcome. Happens to a man a few times in his life.

Happens to me about once a week.

29. Lycurgus - March 11, 2008

Ingraham is just jealous because 60 plays every Sunday Brett had 11 guys chasing after him, and that is exactly 11 more than she’s had her entire life.

30. BrewFan - March 11, 2008

Tim, I would be interested to know the philosophical underpinnings of your concept of manhood and how men should act. I’ll bet you’ve given this a lot of thought. Or watched a lot of movies. One of the two.

31. daveintexas - March 11, 2008

Brew, you don’t think Mr. Internet Tough Guy spent 17 years in the pros gettin clocked by 280 pound human trains?

32. skinbad - March 11, 2008

If Tim thinks giving the boys a squeeze PREVENTS tears he has no credibility with me.

33. pajama momma - March 11, 2008

I agree with your thoughts on this brewfan.

I find it interesting how vicious other men have been regarding Brett’s crying.

And don’t get me wrong, because my hubby’s not around a lot, I have to be the one to tell my sons to suck it up and I do. Seems like all freaking day long in fact.
I’m not raising wussies, but I’m not going to keep them being human either.

34. BrewFan - March 11, 2008

These folks who claim they never cry in public a) have never been in a position to say something personally meaningful before an audience or b) they are sociopathic or c) they are as Dave says ‘Internet Tough’.

35. wiserbud - March 11, 2008

I have to be the one to tell my sons to suck it up and I do.

Perhaps if you didn’t beat them, they wouldn’t cry so much.

36. Will - March 11, 2008

Or they’re members of that small group that just passionately hates Brett Favre and are piling on at an emotional time.

37. Sobek - March 11, 2008

“Perhaps if you didn’t beat them, they wouldn’t cry so much.”

Way to miss the point, Wiser.

38. compos mentis - March 11, 2008

Brew, Favre was crying because the gerbil in his ass was biting his colon.

39. compos mentis - March 11, 2008

^I’m kidding :) I think the guy’s great. He was fantastic for football and I loved watching him. If he cries during his retirment speech, so what?? The guy’s consecutive starts streak is AMAZING. And people want to call him a pussy?

40. eddiebear - March 11, 2008

29: naw. From what I hear, Laura I had a fling with super stud Olbermann for a while.

41. eddiebear - March 11, 2008

I have watched the Army-Navy game as long as I can remember. And I always see the Seniors on both sides break down when the game ends and they realize their careers are over.

I would hardly call them wusses.

42. pajama momma - March 11, 2008

I’m requesting that shirt for my birthday.

Looks as though Brewfan was ahead of the curve with this story.

45. Favre fan - March 14, 2008

When I read her comments I was irate. I really wanted to lash out but she’s not worth the energy. She obviously needs publicity and what better way to do it then to talk about a Legend. She’s pathetic and the women she’s talking about that called her station are probably pathetic as well.
