Yes, I know the “Shark” post is one of the all time hit generators for IB, and that is why I initially was hesitant to write about it. I was afraid that if I touched the Holy Grail of Commenting, my face would melt. But, I felt as though the story of Stephen Perkins was chock full of advice for all the anglers out there. Namely, be careful with the shark you just caught! Things might not go your way!
How bad did things go for Mr. Perkins?
As he was preparing to unhook the fish, it sank its teeth into his wrist leaving him needing re-constructive surgery. It has earned him an unlikely place in history as the first documented case of a man being bitten by a Blue Shark off British waters.
Such was the blood loss that an RAF Sea King helicopter had to be scrambled to take him to North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple on Saturday where he was finally released today.
Yeah, that’s pretty bad. But what did the shark look like? I think I have a picture of the shark with his compatriots:
Or, it could be this one. I dunno. My eyesight isn’t what it used to be.
Either way, I am not going to hag around any type of shark if I can help it.

I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and bright! And I pity Any girl who isn’t me tonight!
Here is a funny shark story, (not to funny for the shark though)
We were out shark fishing one night and hooked a big shark. We fought the thing as a team sport, reeling , pumping the rod, moving the boat to get back some of the line it took, yelling “BEER” and passing the rod to the next guy.
After hours of fighting the beast we finally brought it to the boat. It was a 12′ bull shark, and it was still “frisky”. We decided we had better dispatch him before we brought it into the boat. Out comes the 12 guage, and BOOM!
We shot the line.
And watched in dismay as our monster slid into the bay.
We went home tired and sore with a story no one believed.
Beer, big shark, and shotgun. What could go wrong?
Brought in a 25 pound salmon while fishing on a charter boat with Michael in Lake Michigan years ago. Took me over an hour to reel her in. Was sweating and exhausted.
Fished out on Lake Erie a few years ago with some pastor buddies and couldn’t even put a line in ’cause I was so sea-sick.
That’s it for me… not much of a fisherman… and after reading this even less inclined.
3: sounds like good fun
We have a catch and release (yes you read that right RELEASE) Shark Tournament in Key West every year. It is on ESPN occasionally, look for “Mad Fin Shark Tournament” It is worth watching. You know someone is going to loose a hand etc. But not yet (been going on 3 years or so) one guy did fall in trying to grab a 7′ lemon shark. That was interesting.
Eddie,
I guess I am a thread killer, but here is a link
