“Daddy, That’s The President. Can I Be President Too?” January 22, 2009

“Someday, Sweetie Pie. Someday. Just do your homework and never let anybody get in your way.”
There went the dialogue this evening when my daughter, unprompted, saw a clip of President Obama (ugh!) on the television. And for a brief moment, my partisan veneer cracked, and it hit me that she didn’t see a person of color, or any other Aggrieved Minority ™, but The President of The United States. And that meant something to me.
Eddiebear, I think that like a child many of us also just look at Obama as nothing but the President of the United States; A position we respect and expect much of. We don’t care that he is black, half black or any combination inbetween. For those of us who were raised in families that were not prejudiced it was always, only, ever about how this man voted, what he accomplished, who he associated with, which policies he pushed and his vision of what America SHOULD be. And, honestly, we found the man lacking.
Do you get what I am saying or do I sound like an ass?
I have refrained from mentioning my partisan and policy differences with her. She will be 4 in a few weeks, and I want to imbue in her a respect for the Office. She can (hopefully) be as partisan as me later.
Hey it’s great that your daughter knows that she can be President. Just don’t let her be a crooked Chicago pol.
Tru dat.
“Can I be President, too?”
“Some day, sweetie Pie. Just don’t
hang out with any terroriststhreaten to bankrupt any major U.S. industriesget involved in any corrupt land dealsrefuse to disclose your birth certificate and academic recordsadmit you abused marijuana and cocaineassociate with racist lunatics… yes, you can.”I dunno. I am just trying to let her absorb my respect for the Office, and love of country, regardless of what assclown is President.
