In Memoriam January 23, 2009

I put the lyrics of this song in a comment over at the Hostages. I thought I’d put it up as a post because its a beautiful song and it makes me think of cranky. And I cried a little so bite me.

The lyrics:

Keep a fire burning in your eye
Pay attention to the open sky
You never know what will be coming down
I dont remember losing track of you
You were always dancing in and out of view
I must have thought youd always be around
Always keeping things real by playing the clown
Now youre nowhere to be found

I dont know what happens when people die
Cant seem to grasp it as hard as I try
Its like a song I can hear playing right in my ear
That I cant sing
I cant help listening
And I cant help feeling stupid standing round
Crying as they ease you down
cause I know that youd rather we were dancing
Dancing our sorrow away
(right on dancing)
No matter what fate chooses to play
(theres nothing you can do about it anyway)

Just do the steps that youve been shown
By everyone youve ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
Anothers steps have grown
In the end there is one dance youll do alone

Keep a fire for the human race
Let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know what will be coming down
Perhaps a better world is drawing near
And just as easily it could all disappear
Along with whatever meaning you might have found
Dont let the uncertainty turn you around
(the world keeps turning around and around)
Go on and make a joyful sound

Into a dancer you have grown
From a seed somebody else has thrown
Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own
And somewhere between the time you arrive
And the time you go
May lie a reason you were alive
But youll never know

I called Cranky’s former employer to give him a heads up the cards were on the way. The guy who answered told me he passed away, but they will forward the cards to his next of kin. I’m sorry it took so long to mail out, but they just kept trickling in, and I wanted to wait for some folks and their requests for more time. Here is the obituary from Alabama.

And then I saw this.

On a personal note, I apologize to all that I didn’t get the cards out sooner. I appreciate and am grateful for the trust you showed me, and I just hope you will forgive me for taking so long.

As for Cranky, I hope his relatives appreciate how much he meant to all of us, and that he finds his eternal reward and peace

“Someday, Sweetie Pie. Someday. Just do your homework and never let anybody get in your way.”

There went the dialogue this evening when my daughter, unprompted, saw a clip of President Obama (ugh!) on the television. And for a brief moment, my partisan veneer cracked,  and it hit me that she didn’t see a person of color, or any other Aggrieved Minority ™, but The President of The United States. And that meant something to me.

Size Doesn’t Matter January 21, 2009

I’m talking to women, not men, and we’re talking about head size.

That’s right, head size. There is a new cultural crisis in America, one which demands the immediate attention of President Obama, and probably the appointment of a cabinet-level “czar” with an adequate bureaucracy to tackle this compelling issue.

Young girls are being taught that a ginormous head is beautiful. You heard me. Their body image is being devastated.  The culprit — Bratz dolls.

Actually, I’m just trying out the Vodpod service recommended by Xbradtc in a comment thread below on this video I found at The Onion.  I noticed that Eddiebear used Vodpod in the post just below this one, so I thought I would give it a try.

WordPress is really only friendly to YouTube and Google videos.  Vodpod gives you a  button  on your Bookmarks toolbar that allows you to quickly embed videos in WordPress from other sites which use the Flash Video (.flv) format.   It is super easy and works great.

Thanks, Xbradtc.

By the way, although the video from The Onion is a joke, the American Psychological Association is officially concerned about Bratz dolls, and Barbie, of course (see page 14).

Hmmmm.  Barbie.

That reminds me of the Best YouTube Lipsynch Video Ever!!!

Honestly, today was a bit of a downer for me. But I found a way to survive the next four years.

OldGloryI’m an optimist. I always have been and I always will be. For that reason I prefer to focus on some of the more positive aspects of today’s events and our country’s future.

  • The transition of power in this country is a sight to behold. Never in the chronicles of the ages has such a mighty nation been able to effect this so peacefully for so long. I’m proud of our country today.
  • I have the feeling that today provided the psychological emancipation for African-Americans that has eluded them for many years. If I’m right about this the future of this country is brighter then any of us might be able to see right now.
  • The things Bill Cosby has been trying to teach African-Americans is going to get a real-life exemplar. That is a huge positive.
  • Obama has surrounded himself primarily with pragmatists and centrist Democrats. Things could be a lot worse. The Kos Kids will get a bone thrown their way, no doubt about that, but I don’t think they’re going to get the policy changes they dream about right now.
  • I know I’m going to disagree with most all of the legislation and public policy changes that are going to occur in the next two years, maybe four, but I have faith in our Republic and I have faith in the good intentions of our fellow citizens to ultimately do what is right. We’ve survived Democrats before, and we’ll do it again.

God Bless America.

This reminded me of Eddiebear’s post below about “predictive control” and how the mind operates to anticipate moving objects, even without necessarily seeing them.
