Well, not really “soul”, but these guys were rocking the house around the same time that Michael Bolton was digging up Otis Redding’s grave & pissing on the coffin.
I remember hearing this song on our campus radio station the week it came out. It was a lot like the first time I listened to “The Joshua Tree”. Sort of a “WHOA, what the hell is THAT?”
The Black Crowes were pretty amazing during their brief run in the spotlight–that glorious time in late 1991-early 1992, right when hair metal was dying off, but right before grunge ruined the fun of listening to any rock music at all. Their sound really wasn’t like anything else out there at the time, at least to my untrained 15-year-old ears.
“Shake Your Moneymaker” is a desert island disk.
