This was a view on the way to Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O’Keefe did a lot of work. The rock formations and color at Ghost Ranch are really impressive — you can see why that area and the New Mexico sunlight inspired her so much. At her request, her ashes were spread on a mesa that you see from the ranch, which appears in many of her paintings.
When we pulled over to take this photo, there were three blond women there painting this scene. It was clearly a well known overlook for artists.
(Guys, two of the three blonds were seriously hot chicks in tight jeans with nice butts. I know you were wondering.)
We also lucked out and managed to get a guided tour of O’Keefe’s home in Abiquiú (pronounced like “barbecue”). Normally, you have to book this tour months in advance, but Cathy happened to call right before they had a couple of cancellations. It was awesome. She was truly an inspirational personality.
Hey Laura, did you know that Georgia was a gardening fanatic? She was interested in nutrition, and grew all the produce she needed on site, because produce she brought up from Santa Fe would not be fresh. She had trees producing everything from figs to plums. She had flowers all over the place, and made bonsai versions of desert plants.
Did they mention why she spelled O’Keeffe with 2 Fs? It’s kinda weird.
To me, the spelling with a single F looks weird. My understanding, which might be wrong, is that the original Gaelic was anglicized with 2 Fs to O’Keeffe. But then some people misspelled that, which is where the single F version comes from. In Ireland, I think the 2 Fs version is more common, but maybe the 1 F version is more common in America.
Gorgeous photo, Cathy.
*hug*
Those trees… you are there at just the right time.
I’m enjoying your trip.
Ha. I read “Chama” as “Obama”.
Too much political news is bad for the eyes…

*reading Wiki article* Wow, sounds like she was a really interesting person. I bet the tour was neat.
Nifty. The photo has the same colors as that piece of Picture Jasper.
It does kinda look like a vajayjay, now that you mention it.
*tilts head*
*looks down*
*looks back at screen*
Is this a color-blind thing?
A vajayjay? What?
One track mind.
Are you people fucking with me? O’Keeffe? You’ve heard of her, right?
Dude, I thought you were talking about the pic of the Chama Valley. That is one long brown snaky vajayjay.
They all look like that to me.
Ok, I keep my eyes closed. Too skert.
Didn’t they go to Chama in Lonesome Dove?
Wrong movie and it was a guys name — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehJzUik27as
I was thinking of the right guy, though.
Good movie.
