Texas Speaker Standoff January 11, 2011
Posted by Cathy in Honor, News, Politics.trackback
Cold dank Monday morning clouds hovered over the Capitol Building in Austin as Texans converged to duke it out in heated debate of words and wills with the newly elected members of the Texas House of Representatives.
Hundreds of Tea Party folks got up early to take on the politicians. They were well armed with documentation clearly showing rationale, lists and maps of the capitol offices, and their sunny dispositions, tenacity, and willingness to try to influence Republican legislators who would be voting in the caucus later in the day.
Conservatives and Tea Party members are expressing concern that given the overwhelming victory in the number of House Republicans, Joe Straus, who received most of his support from Democrats voting for him in the last session, is not conservative and should be ‘ousted.’ AND 89-90% of conservatives, including Republican Precinct Chairs from all over the state, voted for Ken Paxton.
Stephanie Carter, newly elected Representative, showed a willingness to listen to appeals from constituents and supporters walking the halls. Tea Party volunteers and conservative Republicans outside her own district walked her precincts to help Get Out The Vote (GOTV). Some volunteers remember the day of pouring rain and tornadoes, getting soaked to the skin, concerns about getting struck by lightening while walking door to door, and trying to keep her door-hangers dry.
While some were visiting offices, others were rallying outside the Capitol. Ken Emanuelson, a Dallas Tea Party leader, warmed the crowd by reminding us why we were making this effort and what was at stake.
Hand made signs have become a signature of the Tea Party.
…
…
…
And when Ken Emanuelson, head of the Dallas Tea Party hands you the mike you think fast. Folks interrupted their own lives, traveled here, paid for gas, food and hotel. They did it for a reason… not simply to stand outside in the cold or to wander hallways and into offices hoping to be granted a listening ear. So I reminded and affirmed these honest, decent, hard working folks of all stripes and fancies that we share the passion inside of us to show up.
We’ve been paying attention. We read. We listen. We know the truth. And what we are hearing from some is not the truth. “And I don’t know about you all, but I’m gonna stay on this like a dog on a pant-leg, getting bloody being dragged down their rocky path if necessary, but I’m not gonna let go. Who’s with me?!”
So much more to say and share… It’s Tuesday morning and a big rally at the Capitol starts in just a few minutes.

Yeah Cathy! Keep fighting the good fight
Thanks for being there and representing our values, Cathy!
Let us know which way the Reps vote on Straus, if they ever let it become public….
Straus is four Republican votes shy of getting re-elected as Speaker without a single Democrat vote.
Not quite as bad as Goliad, but not San Jacinto either.
You go girl!!!
Way to open up a can of Awesome!
Thank you Dallas Morning News, they’re trotting out the “it’s because he’s a Jew” libel.
I can always count on them to be despicable. I cancelled my subscription in 1989, but every now and them I like to send them an email to remind them about it.
Yay Cathy!!!
Ken Paxton has withdrawn from the race. It’s over.
Oh well. Hopefully Strauss realizes it’s time for him to tack hard right, and that committee appointments and the legislative agenda should reflect the new composition of the House.
I would bet money that Strauss committed to this in the closed-door Republican caucus, because they voted 70-30 for him, and they realize that they will incur the wrath of th Tea Party if Strauss does not deliver. This might work out OK.
“Fifteen of the 150 members voted against Straus. Two who were present didn’t vote, including freshman Rep. Jason Isaac of Dripping Springs.”
Fifteen.
What in the hell happened??
Just got home from Austin. Thanks for the encouragement, folks. Need some downtime to process.
I just know that 1) things will work out eventually, and 2) we conservatives will be even more organized and more tenacious in the future… we’re learning and getting to know each other’s strengths. You ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.
Ken Paxton talks with Tea Party & Conservatives in our hospitality room after opening session to explain why he withdrew today.
…And then Representative Wayne Christian shares his gratitude and says to remember John Quincy Adams quote: “The work is ours the results are HIS!”
Texas wimmins are some of the best! I can hear that southern drawl almost drippin’ off those lips. Plus they have the advantage of being able to say anything about anyone…as long as the sentence ends with (or begins with) bless her heart.
Is that a giant armadillo just behind the capital rotunda?
“Standoff”? Is that some sort of Texan Tea Party eliminationist rhetoric?
At least my Rep Dan Flynn stood his ground!
I need to email him and thank him.
