What a Hero Looks Like May 30, 2011

Update (BrewFan): I hope you all won’t mind if I bump this to the top again. God bless and have a great Memorial Day.

Billy and his family lived next door to us. Billy was 5 years older then me so we didn’t hang together but as so often happens he was one of the ‘older guys’ that us ‘younger guys’ like to admire. For good reason as it turns out.

Billy won the Silver Star for the actions that lead to his death. His unit was ambushed and despite being gravely wounded, he refused to leave his post. My understanding is he was manning a machine gun and his actions prevented his group from being overrun.

So, on this Memorial Day, I’d like you to meet Billy. He exemplifies everything good about the men and women produced by this country.

The stories of past courage… can offer hope, they can provide inspiration. But they cannot supply courage itself. For this each man must look into his own soul. – John F. Kennedy

Damn. I was born a few months before your friend died. I hate seeing pictures of such young men killed in the prime of their lives. My uncle was also killed in Vietnam at a very young age, much to the horror of my Dad who was there at the time. I honor their sacrifices and am grateful that such people are willing to give all for our freedoms, but it still pains me when it happens. Perhaps that’s a good thing lest war seem to be an ‘easy’ thing.

Another 4th ID hero.

RIP Sergeant.

May their sacrifices never be in vain. Nor shall a person who besmirches the military and the brave people serving in uniform ever do it a second time in a perfect world.

God rest you Billy. So young.
Thank you Brew for the post, and for your service.

Great email from my Dad about the WWII air war. 43,000 planes lost overseas in battle.

440 men killed a DAY. 1600 a MONTH. Astounding. Air training went like this: “you can learn how to fly those ’51s on the way to target…they all have a stick and a throttle. Just fly em.”
