Flyin’ Brian is back from Beijing, China. He and his crew assembled a couple of Bell 407 helicopters and test flew them. Here’s a couple of photos from the trip:
Assembling the Rotor System. I bet you didn’t realize how complicated it was. Did you know what holds the Rotor onto the helicopter? The Jesus Nut.
Pretend you’re going to fly this thing, (click to make it bigger). I have enough trouble remembering which button to push on my Xbox 360 ™ controller, when I play Call of Duty.
Brian’s off to South Africa in a couple of weeks. I’m going to stay in the Spud State.

He had a great time but he’s pretty jet-lagged right now.
comin back here was always harder for some reason.
Welcome home Brian
The controls and instruments are pretty easy to understand.
Actually convincing the thing to fly is the challenge.
If you don’t have to use your weight to lean it into the curves, it can’t be all that hard.
And it’s got a windscreen to keep the bugs out of your teeth!
ok lessee… the collective is in my left hand, the cyclic in my right.. pushin the pedal thingys…
*noses into the dirt*
ok ok ok I got it
All you really need to know is which button launches the missiles.
the collective is in my left hand, the cyclic in my right
Correct, Grasshopper.
Brian has let me fly the helicopter for short periods of time… usually about 5 seconds before I say “You Got IT”.
One thing I remember is that you constantly have to correct all the controls and you don’t have to move them much.
Helicoptors don’t actually fly. They beat the air into submission.
They’re so ugly the earth rejects them.
Welcome back, Brian. Greats pictures. Thanks for sharing, Geezer.
Flying helicopters must be like a great video game, except your very LIFE is actually on the line, every single time.
I never fail to be impressed by those who pilot and ride these machines.
And – Welcome back, Brian !
