The Nuge on “gun-free” zones April 21, 2007

Bad people do not care about your rules.

Ted makes perfectly good sense, and backs it up with examples of ordinary citizens (and an off duty cop) stopping a murderer from killing more victims.  This is not rocket science.

The alternative viewpoint is expressed by Paul Helmke of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.  He’s pretty timid, limiting his points to how more guns means more gun crimes, and goes off on the “large capacity magazine” misdirection, stating that it used to be illegal to buy them (not true, it was never illegal to buy them, it was illegal to manufacture or import them for a period of time).  This ignores completely whether or not Cho actually HAD them; the MSM is talking about them as if he did, but that has not been established as a fact (and won’t be anytime soon, because that will take the air out of the smoke and mirrors argument).

It’s a stupid point.  I’m not the world’s more proficient shooter, but even I can empty an 8 round .45 magazine, drop it, replace it and start shooting again, in one to two seconds.

Not.  Hard.

As an aside, I’m really glad to have Ted as a new neighbor (well, within 30 miles).  Makes me feel safer.

Author’s note: I posted something similar on this yesterday but due to mine own stupidity had to take it down.  You’re not seeing things.  This is not deja vu.

I heard them say on the news that Virginia doesn’t have a 5-day waiting period, as if that would have changed anything.

IIRC he bought the guns more than 5 days prior, so that is a typical misleading statement.

Thats the point i was trying to make over at Aces when several guys were saying that the men in classrooms should have rushed the guy. You can shoot a lot of bullets from two guns in a matter of seconds. It’s not so easy to rush a guy, more than a few feet off, through a hail of gunfire.

Whether Cho was a proficient shooter or not i dont know, but id be willing to bet he was a proficient reloader. I bet he practiced a lot.

3. dr4 - April 21, 2007

I dont know how many of you saw this when somebody posted this in the comments at aces but its worth a read. I had never heard of this before, but the worst school attack in American history took place in Bath Michigan in the 20s. We’re lucky Cho didnt plan things as carefully as this psycho:

That stuff about the Bath Township School was news as well to me, Amish. Amazing what can come from a sick mind.

As far as “rushing the shooter” goes, as I understand the situation, he basically came in the door to each classroom with his guns blazing. You can’t train people to rush into a hail of bullets (they tried that during WW1, and look where that went), and EVERYONE is going to hesitate, if even for a second. I can’t blame the victims for not immediately responding to a Blitz Attack like this, because I have no idea how I would react to the attack myself.

Back to the Nuge. Im a big fan, but he puts too much political stuff in his concerts nowdays. I agree with what he says, but i didnt come to the show to hear his opinion on Bill Clinton – I came to hear him rock. Its kind of disconcerting to hear him give a speech about Janet Reno and then start playing Wang Dang Sweet Poontang.

6. daveintexas - April 21, 2007

dr, I was in agreement with your point over at AoS. That and the pure shock factor.

Many of us are prepared to do today what we never expected to have to do yesterday.

7. Wickedpinto - April 21, 2007

I need to frequent “ban free zones.”

8. Wickedpinto - April 21, 2007

You can’t train people to rush into a hail of bullets (they tried that during WW1,

You are talking about charging into entreanched defenses.

The basic protocols for a “near ambush” meaning people with automatic weapons shooting at you in a place of their chosing and are within 50 meters or less is to turn to the attack and charge and doing fiering anyware, even into the air as long as you don’t shoot your fellow Fire Team, Squad, Plt or whatever.

It works when you are already targeted, but not when you are entreanched, different comparisson.

9. Wickedpinto - April 21, 2007

As for criticism for the people not charging, I agree though. I don’t think you can ask one person to do it, you have to have faith that everyone else is gonna do it too.

10. Wickedpinto - April 21, 2007

It has a gun in it, so it’s not off topic but grumpy had this included in the post.

“That’s YerUnk about 45 years ago, with a Classic “CrossEyed Little FuckTard” (CELF TM) smile going on.”

Thats funny, especially when you look at the pic and think about all his yapping about zombies.

11. Wickedpinto - April 21, 2007

Speaking of gun free zones, the White Sox, Tigers game is pretty fun, and so far completely un-interrupted by gunfire.

I didn’t know that WordPress interlinking causes automated trackbacking.

I’m NOT blogwhoring, I’m just doing what the boss told me.

Of course Mesa said “you should” in a way that left the decision up to me, but we all know how that works out.

Like he sneaks into your test blog and gives it a gay name and then posts pictures of John Travolta and insinuates it was ME who did it. Meanwhile it was HIM! but heres the question. . . . who has the picture of john travolta in his flikr? Me? OH! wait, no. It’s the big fat meany mesa.

I tell you I’m working with a tyrant here.

Only thing worse would be working for LauraW.

Sorry LauraW, I will get you those 30 meters of “shoreline” and the “keys for the humvee” I’m sorry.

WP:

I loved that botched sneak pick off attempt the Tigers pulled. It damn near took Casey’s head off. It seems the Tigers haven’t learned anything from the World Series.

As for the topic at hand, look at Britain as to how gun confiscation has been a disaster. Now, only the criminals have guns, and crime is out of control in certain parts of London.

14. Brian "I like venison too" Maiville - April 24, 2007

I don’t know how I found this place. What’s a blog? Is this? Anyways, we in Michigan miss the Nuge sort of. He tried to kick my ass in 1970, when I insulted his new band at a concert (I was right, it sucked). Good thing I can run faster than him. Anyway, I think these statistics are from 2000: 73 people were killed in Britain by guns-where guns are much more controlled than in the US. The U.S. has 5 times the population of Britain, so, all things equal, one would predict that there should be about 365 gun deaths in the U.S.. That year there were 8719.

Nuge says, “That’s cause we’re better shots.” I think the Nuge is wrong. Also, Nuge is way more a sexual predator than Clinton. Take a look at his early history.

Oh, now I remember how I got here. I googled Carlos Santana, ’cause I found one of his guitar picks in my wife’s underwear drawer.

Are you guys and gals pretty sane? Or should I vacate this area?

15. Michael - April 24, 2007

What’s a blog?

A site where people who think they are interesting post shit for other people to read.

Is this?

No.

We are just commenters, not bloggers.

Are you guys and gals pretty sane?

That sort of depends on your perspective. I don’t think anyone here will take a position on that issue.

Or should I vacate this area?

That’s totally up to you, but if you are 100% sure that you are sane, I would get out quick.

🙂

16. kevlarchick - April 24, 2007

Carlos Santana’s guitar pick?!!

Man I want to hang with your wife. We will par-tay.

great story dude. Except Terrible Ted didnt have a new band in 1970. He was with the Amboy Dukes from 67 to 74. And the Nuge doesnt have to chase anybody down – he just shoots them full of flaming arrows.

Nuge is way more a sexual predator than Clinton.

Yeah and David Lee Roth looks better than Dick Cheney in assless chaps…barely. So whats your point? Nugent is a Rock Star. Clinton was leader of the Free World. Im pretty sure our elected leaders should be held to a slightly higher standard than a guy in a leopard skin loincloth singing Wang Dang Sweet Poontang.

’cause I found one of his guitar picks in my wife’s underwear drawer.

Im afraid i dont believe you. I could believe you found a pic that once belonged to one of those tubby bastards from Los Lobos in her drawer, maybe, but not Carlos’.

18. Brian "I like venison too" Maiville - April 25, 2007

Well, I can tell you’re a rather friendly bunch. The story about Nuge trying to chase me down is true. I went and checked the band history, and damned if the band wasn’t still called the Amboy Dukes. I’m pretty sure it was either 1970 or 71 and he was playing at the Michigan Union. I remember him saying something about the “new band.” Anyway they sucked, and I started heckling from the crowd, and he jumped off the stage to come after me. I got out of there before he could catch me. The girl I was with wasn’t that impressed.

And what do you mean that a president should have higher standards than a rock star? It was just a little blow job. Ted was into that young statutory stuff.

19. Mrs. Peel - April 25, 2007

btw, Brian, you can’t compare handgun murders to handgun murders across cultures. Some cultures would never use handguns in their murders, preferring instead knives (Italians are an example).

20. Dave in Texas - April 25, 2007

Let’s just rename them “Kill Defenseless Citizen Zones” and be done with it. It’ll be like a deer lease.

21. geoff - April 25, 2007

And what do you mean that a president should have higher standards than a rock star? It was just a little blow job.

I can see someone needs to be sent to sexual harassment reeducation camp. And calling it a “little blow job” isn’t very flattering to our 42nd President.
