A Way to Get Better Customer Service? October 23, 2007

There’s a fairly strong interest among IBers in packing heat. Some have concealed carry permits and some are in the process. It’s kind of easy to forget the open carry option.

Does that feel too “Wild West” to you? Personally, I don’t think I would want the attention drawn to it (or me). I would probably assume someone carrying openly would be involved with law enforcement one way or another. It would seem so out of the norm as to be misleading in a way. Lots of typical to and fro in the comments.  The mother “packingmama” mentioned in the article shows up in the comments.

The open carry website that shows the laws for each state (and that is mentioned in the article) is www.opencarry.org I find it interesting that many New England states have more permissive carry rules than a state like Texas. Open Carry’s motto is “A right unexercised is a right lost.” A lot of people don’t vote, but I don’t think they’re in danger of losing the right. If I lived in an area that prohibited or made the concealed carry option too onerous, maybe this right would be important to me. Thoughts?

I had a friend in Arizona, while I was going to school there, that would carry his .357 in a holster when he rode his Harley to school. He would check it in at the front office on his way in, and retrieve on his way out. Nothing was ever said.

The more restrictive Texas open carry law was instituted when the Democrats owned the state legislature.

I’m happier if you’re a bad guy and you just wonder if I’m carrying, rather than giving you any advanced intel.

Interesting, I followed the link and found out that it is legal to open carry in Michigan. Never would have guessed that.

I have a feeling, though, that if I decide to exercise that right in the town that I live in I’ll immediately be surrounded by many LEO’s with weapons drawn.

In Ohio, you can’t ‘open carry’ in a vehicle without a concealed carry permit. It’s stupid.

If I were carrying, I would feel safer carrying covertly, like Dave said. Keep ’em guessing. Walking around with a gun on your hip doesn’t make others feel safer, in my opinion. It makes most folks nervous as hell.

I’ve had a police officer in Montgomery tell me that it is legal to open carry in Alabama. But I’ve never seen someone carry openly in Alabama. I seem to remember one case earlier this year in which some guy was carrying openly and he was arrested. At least 50 percent of the people probably have a gun in the car with them here.

I have a concealed carry permit and I always carry during the work week. When I put my pistol on the dash one time, the guy who was fucking with me decided that perhaps he should not be an aggressive driver trying to force me off the road. Got himself some manners and we had no further trouble.

I’m with Dave on letting them wonder.

It’s a tactical advantage. The look you give em makes em wonder if you have something behind that sweet smile.

Let em wonder. And worry.

Let em wonder. And worry.

Yeah, try that here. You’ll be wondering where all the bullets are coming from.

You have a different tactical situation capn.

Here it’s better to watch em look at you and wonder.

There it’s probably better to strap on and let them shrink back.

Retraining of staff? How about fire the motherfucker? Then tell everyone else “There’s your goddam retraining. Questions?”
