Big News: Rally Over NYC Police Acquittals April 26, 2008

This weekend, Mrs. Michael attended the 2008 Women of Faith Conference on Friday night and all day today. She’s done this before, and says it’s an awesome experience. About 18,000 women packed Nationwide Arena.

Meanwhile, the breaking news right now is a pathetically small crowd mustered by Al Sharpton to protest a verdict that allows him to pimp racial politics.

Hundreds of people have held a protest in New York over the decision to clear three police officers of all charges in the killing of an unarmed black man.

Sean Bell, 23, died in a barrage of 50 police bullets as he left a strip club with two friends, hours before he was due to be married in November 2006.

You can read about the martydom of poor unarmed Sean Bell in the Wikipedia article here. I hate to seem unsympathetic, but it sounds to me like Sean’s untimely demise was entirely caused by the fact that Sean was an asshole.

The ability of a publicity whore like Sharpton to get taken seriously by anyone continues to bewilder me.

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton told crowds in Harlem that the police had no right to shoot unarmed citizens.

He called for a campaign of civil disobedience to protest the verdict.

Mr Sharpton told the rally they would hold a meeting next week to plan the day when they would “close this city down . . . This city is going to deal with the blood of Sean Bell.”

Al won’t close the city down. Al is just a big fat clown.

Prepare for the Next Ice Age April 25, 2008

Huh? What about global warming and “greenhouse gasses”?

They don’t matter, according to an increasing number of voices.

Solar flares matter, and the recent (and cyclical) flurry of sunspot activity is over.

THE scariest photo I have seen on the internet is http://www.spaceweather.com, where you will find a real-time image of the sun from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, located in deep space at the equilibrium point between solar and terrestrial gravity.

What is scary about the picture is that there is only one tiny sunspot.

Disconcerting as it may be to true believers in global warming, the average temperature on Earth has remained steady or slowly declined during the past decade, despite the continued increase in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, and now the global temperature is falling precipitously.

But, but, but, isn’t the earth still warming? I mean, Al Gore was sure about this! He won a Nobel Prize, fer cryin’ out loud.

Um, it’s just possible that Al was wrong.

All four agencies that track Earth’s temperature (the Hadley Climate Research Unit in Britain, the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, the Christy group at the University of Alabama, and Remote Sensing Systems Inc in California) report that it cooled by about 0.7C in 2007. This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record and it puts us back where we were in 1930. If the temperature does not soon recover, we will have to conclude that global warming is over.

There is also plenty of anecdotal evidence that 2007 was exceptionally cold. It snowed in Baghdad for the first time in centuries, the winter in China was simply terrible and the extent of Antarctic sea ice in the austral winter was the greatest on record since James Cook discovered the place in 1770.

I know what you are thinking. You are thinking — what does this mean for me, as a practical matter?

I’ll tell you. Now is the time to buy sweaters, before the price runs up.

Reevaluating Net Neutrality April 25, 2008

Let’s just cut to the bottom line. I am completely reversing my position. I hereby renounce all prior statements I have made on this subject. Like the statements appearing in posts and comments here, here, and especially here (where I rashly said that net neutrality was “bullshit”). I was wrong. Oh so wrong.

Tania Derveaux is young and beautiful and she wants your attention. And thanks to her first two attributes, odds are she won’t have a tough time getting it. But just to make sure, she’s posing nearly nude online and making an offer to those less-experienced Internet enthusiasts of the world.

According to the text next to Tania’s image, “I will make love with every virgin who defends the Internet.”

OK, maybe I’m technically not a virgin, but how is Tania going to know?

I have seen the light.

I love this song.  Will Ackerman has some great ones.  Thought you all could carry something like this in your hearts into this weekend instead of some of the other stuff we’ve been reading about.

Genocide Against Blacks in America? April 24, 2008

With an election approaching, the culture war in America is heating up. Viable black and female candidates have added grist to the mill.

But today it was a little different. Black pastors attacked a liberal icon — Planned Parenthood.

WASHINGTON — The Planned Parenthood Federation of America has perpetuated a “genocide on the black community,” says a group of African-American pastors who claimed Thursday the birth control and abortion provider has had a racist agenda since its beginnings in 1921.

Holding a brief vigil and press conference in front of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Washington, D.C., the group of pastors and activists said they were incensed by the results of recent “undercover” inquiries into several Planned Parenthood clinics across the country.

“Every day … over 1,500 black babies are murdered inside the black woman’s womb,” said Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, of Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND). “This is a race issue.”

Wow. That sure shatters some stereotypes about the automatic submission of blacks to the socially liberal agenda of the Democrats. Or their automatic loyalty to Obama, the ultra-liberal guy who refused to vote against federal funding for partial birth abortions.

The pastors urged Congress to initiate an audit of the organization and have written letters demanding that money for Planned Parenthood be eliminated from federal Title X funding, of which the group got $65 million for fiscal year 2007, according to pro-life Concerned Women of America. In total, Planned Parenthood received $300 million in government contracts and grants in the current fiscal year.

OK, maybe these pastors are Christian extremists or something that don’t really represent the black community. But I’ve read before that blacks tend to be socially conservative. They support Milton Friedman’s idea of school vouchers, for example (more than anyone, they would like an escape path from dysfunctional public school systems). They tend to oppose gay marriage.

The black vote does not necessarily belong to the Democrats. And Obama does not necessarily represent the black constituency just because of his race.

***Update #2***

I don’t know, skinbad….

*pokes book club with a stick*

It might be dead.

Has anybody who is not an ancient crocodile deity read this book?  I have the ultimate discussion question to ask, but I don’t want to spoil the ending for those who are still enthralled by the monumental literary masterwork of our generation.

Where do we stand, dear readers?

I thought I would pass this helpful article along in the name of safety for our lady friends. A few highlights to keep in mind:

Choose opaque fabric — nothing transparent

Select a tailored or man-style shirt, blazer or jacket — frilly makes you appear submissive.

A vest with zipper pockets or a concealed pocket provides a place for money, credit cards, license and passport, etc

A tailored hat, such as a Fedora, increases apparent height, has masculine association and makes you appear somewhat stronger.

Look passers-by directly in the eye

Maybe a visual will help you get the idea. Maybe something like this: (more…)

Time for some jazz. Here’s the legendary Stanley Turrentine.

I saw this guy live at Blues Alley in Georgetown with Mrs. Michael and the kids (both of whom played sax at the time).

Good times.
