Do Red States Do More Volunteer Work? July 28, 2009

Kind of.

You see, the Corporation for National and Community Service just came out its report on volunteerism in America, where they estimate the number of hours of community service provided by each state. Since conservatives and liberals like to argue about who is more generous, I thought I’d plot the hours of community service vs. the % of people who voted for Barack Obama in 2008. For all 50 states, of course.

VotingvsVolunteerism

The cloud of data wasn’t very informative until I highlighted the Southern states, who were bringing down the Red state community service hours. As you can see, if you ignore those states (TX, OK, LA, MS, AL, GA, FL, SC, KY, TN, MO, AR and NC), there’s a pretty definite trend of increasing volunteerism with increasing conservatism (if you can count voting for McCain as conservatism).

So why are the southern states so chintzy? I’m guessing it’s due to low income levels: the people who are charitable are the people who can afford to be charitable.

Kudos, BTW, to Washington, Oregon, Maine, Vermont, and Maryland for being well above the Blue state trendline. And of course, to Utah, who blew away everybody with more than 80 hours per capita volunteer work.

Heh. They sure volunteer like they are.

Diamonds?

But, you should see the graph of how generous ‘bama voters are with YOUR time and money.

Diamonds?

I was . . . betrayed . . . by triangles. There’s no other word for it. Betrayed.

I’ll never go back.

The irony of Michelle Obama’s campaign speech is killing me:

He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed.

Look to your core states first, m’dear, because until NY, NY, and CA start ponying up, I don’t think anybody else is going to pay any attention.

Florida is too part of the South. Sadly, a lot of us ain’t gonna rise again.

It’d be a hell of a lot easier to look like part of the South if all the damned yankees would stay home to die.

We’d do a lot more volunteer work, but there’s not much that’s useful you can do from a Rascal.

Triangles are dirty little whores.

You work with them, play with them – you think you know them. And then one day you wake up and they’re packing their things and they tell you that in all those years, you never were even close to their hot spot.

Mmmm…power graphing.

Getting me all hot and bothered.

So…

…what you’re saying is…

…the triangles. They’re back on the market, so to say?

…the triangles. They’re back on the market, so to say?

Sure, if you’re into psycho-polygons. They’re not well-centered.

Triangles are gay. NTTAWWT.

Fuck you, Particle Man…

Fuck you, Triangle Man! Hater.

Gravatar fail…

17. geoff - July 28, 2009

Gravatar fail…

And, um, spelling fail.

18. John Stansbury - July 28, 2009

Well, that Gravatar fail thing has made up for my months–long campaign to make the whole Particle Man song pun.

I mean, I don’t even like triangles.

…now maybe I can figure out how to make the whole Kieth Olberman burning man thing happen…
