Best Wedding March Ever July 27, 2009

You have probably already seen this, but if not, here it is:

I was touched by this.  It’s supposed to be funny, but it’s more than that.  It is a bunch of kids who put a lot of effort, and courage, into making a special event for the marriage of their friends, and celebrating their union.

Puking Lions With Lantana July 26, 2009

As long as we’re doing flower pictures:

Note that the pool boy is keeping that pool very clean

Lipstick’s picture of the puking lions, taken in early April  when the lantana had just been planted, is here.  They are perennials, and we have extended the sprinkler system into the Puking Lions Planter, so it is pretty much going to take care of itself (we hope).

Bougainvillea.  Something.

This stuff loves Texas until we get a freeze.  Then it says “fuckit”.  So more popular in South Texas than here.

Pretty flowers though.

Congrats, Minimum Wagers! You’re Making $7.25/hr!! (if you still have a job) July 25, 2009

Yesterday marked the 3rd increase in minimum wage since 2007. We’ve gone from $5.25 to $5.85 to $6.55 and now to $7.25. Conservatives always argue that increases in minimum wage will have a number of negative effects on the economy, unemployment among them.

So, have the past two minimum wage hikes had an effect on the unemployment rate?

I think it’s hard to say, though it looks suspicious. But you can say with some certainty that it didn’t help the unemployment situation. It also probably means that the latest wage hike is going to make things worse, particularly for entry-level workers.

Minimum wage, health care, pork projects, cap & trade…could the Dems possibly try harder to shackle the economy?

Need Rain? Get Your Daughters To Plow Naked July 24, 2009

Posted by Michael in Gardening.

This is a great idea.

PATNA, India (Reuters) – Farmers in an eastern Indian state have asked their unmarried daughters to plow parched fields naked in a bid to embarrass the weather gods to bring some badly needed monsoon rain, officials said on Thursday.

Witnesses said the naked girls in Bihar state plowed the fields and chanted ancient hymns after sunset to invoke the gods. They said elderly village women helped the girls drag the plows.

I love it.  These people have come up with a brilliant way to make the best  of a bad situation.

FATHERS:  Hey girls, you’re going to have to plow naked again, because we need rain.

“They (villagers) believe their acts would get the weather gods badly embarrassed, who in turn would ensure bumper crops by sending rains,” Upendra Kumar, a village council official, said from Bihar’s remote Banke Bazaar town.

“This is the most trusted social custom in the area and the villagers have vowed to continue this practice until it rains very heavily.”

I betcha that’s a vow they are going to keep.

An apparent first-time commenter here just posted the 100,000th Comment at Innocent Bystanders!!!

The comment references a previous comment about Demolition Man.  Here it is:

“WHY did you remind me about the three seashells, Ed???

Never did figure that out”

It’s sort of like “Hamster Huey and the Gooey Kablooie” or “the Noodle Incident” from Calvin and Hobbes–it’s best left to the imagination.

That is just the sort of insightful commentary on matters of public importance that has made Innocent Bystanders the most renowned commenters site on the intertubes which is not a blog.

That’s what my kid’s science teacher said when he was chosen by NASA to become an astronaut.   He will go next year with the Teachers in Space program.

How cool is that?

Back in the day, buddy set two world records on a KC-10 aircraft.

Big bad mofo.   So is the plane.

Space? Aint no thang.

President Obama Must Have Watched Demolition Man July 23, 2009

Gabe commented on a quote from Obama’s Q&A session last night:

The question was: “Do you think — do you accept the premise that other than some tax increases on the wealthiest Americans, the American people are going to have to give anything up in order for this to happen?”

The president answered: “They’re going to have to give up paying for things that don’t make them healthier. And I — speaking as an American, I think that’s the kind of change you want.”

Like cheeseburgers and cigarettes and alcohol and cars that drive faster than 25 miles per hour?

Which immediately brings to mind this scene from Demolition Man:
