Happy New Year December 31, 2010

Here’s wishes for a joyous New Year from the dark heart of Winterset, IA.

In celebration, here is a song from the second greatest* two-man band ever.  Local H, featuring Scott and Joe (the original lineup) from the ’96 CD “Pack Up The Cats”.

I bought this disc when it came out, and I recently dug it out and put it on a regular rotation.   Yet another important thing I need to teach Mo’ Money.

Speaking of Mo’ Money, he’s doing fine.  He’s developing a bit of a stutter, but I think its mostly from being excited.

Happy New Year Russ.

Yes, little boys get excited about almost everything. And then they become big boys and still get excited about almost anything.

Bacon!
Guns!
Boobs!
Chainsaws!
Beer!
Making Loud Noises!
Detroying Things!

2. Michael - December 31, 2010

Happy New Year to Mo and family, and all our IB friends!

3. Michael - December 31, 2010

Dang, Russ, that is a good song. I never heard of Local H before.

4. Russ from Winterset - December 31, 2010

That’s why they’re “The Greatest Two-Man Band that Noone Has EVER Heard Of”.

Browse their YouTube catalog, and you’ll find all sorts of goodness. “Eddie Vedder” and “Bound for the Floor” are original songs, but they also do GREAT covers of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and “Wolf Like Me” by TV on the Radio.

Two quick corrections: The “Pack Up The Cats” CD is from ’98, not ’96 (I got the dates confused with “As Good As Dead”), and the asterisk should have been followed up by a footnote stating that the Greatest Two-Man Band Ever consists of Richard Thompson jamming with any other musician.

5. Russ from Winterset - December 31, 2010

Here’s a live video of both the cover songs I referenced. It’s a little sloppier than the studio versions, but it represents the live show pretty well. I still like the 90’s version of the band with Joe on drums better, but the new drummer does a great job too.

6. daveintexas - December 31, 2010

kevl, that’s my “bucket list”

7. Sobek - December 31, 2010

They Might Be Giants.

I’ve heard Local H before. Bound for the Floor gets radio play in the last two or three places I’ve lived.

8. Russ from Winterset - December 31, 2010

But most people have heard of TMBG, Sobek. At least their “You’re Not the Boss of Me” song gets recognition for being associated with “Malcolm in the Middle”.

And “Bound for the Floor” is good, but it sure ain’t their best work.

9. Sobek - December 31, 2010

To be clear, you designated Local H the best 2-man band no one ever heard of (not true, because Bound for the Floor gets radio play), and the second-best 2-man band ever (not true, because TMBG beats them out).

Game, set, match.

10. The Lovely Janis - December 31, 2010

TMBG also have done some songs for Disney — Moses loves the theme song to Micky Mouse Club House and the hot dog song too. And they did “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” for the movie Meet the Robinsons — which is one of my favorites
(and not just because Tom Selleck does the voice of the father)!!!

11. skinbad - December 31, 2010

* Indigo Girls?

12. Sobek - December 31, 2010

Captain and Tenille

13. Russ from Winterset - December 31, 2010

Sonny & Cher?

14. Pupster - December 31, 2010

Seals and Croft.

15. Dave in Texas - December 31, 2010

Arm and Hammer

16. geoff - December 31, 2010

Donnie and Marie

Michael - December 31, 2010

The best one-man band I ever heard was this guy at a bar in a little town in New Zealand. It was on the west coast towards the north end of the South Island. Maybe Nelson or Hokitika. He did an especially awesome version of “No Woman No Cry”.

He did guitar, vocal, mouth harp, and percussion (with his feet) all by himself. No help from anything digital. I was blown away.

We bought a small jade (also known as greenstone) sculpture in that area, direct from the artist, who is well known for this. It is mined locally. It is probably one of the more valuable items in our house, along with the teak panel from northern Thailand in the Batcave. The design is nouveau-Maori, which seems to be popular in this business. It’s a very hard stone. They have to burn up diamond bits to carve it.

Michael - December 31, 2010

OK, I gotta go shower and put on a tux.

Happy New Year!

17. GrumpyUnk - December 31, 2010

Happy New Year to all of ya.

18. Cathy - December 31, 2010

Happy New Year, Everyone. Later… much later.

19. Lipstick - December 31, 2010

Happy New Year, Goofballs!

20. Sobek - December 31, 2010

Bert and Ernie.
Vodka and Twizzlers.

Happy New Year, everyone. Tonight I finished a book called “Late Bablyonian Letters,” containing a transliteration and translation of clay tablets written in Babylonian cuneiform from the period between Nabonidus (last king of Babylon) and Darius (third king of the Persian Empire). It was very interesting. More importantly, that means I read 27 books about the Middle East this year. I feel a deep and abiding sense of accomplishment.

21. Wickedpinto - January 1, 2011

ween, pretty sure they are brothers.

22. kevl - January 1, 2011

What is the difference between transliteration and translation?

Happy New Year everyone!

23. harrison - January 1, 2011

Happy New Year to you nice folks!

24. Retired Geezer - January 1, 2011

Since Sobek’s kids have exhausted him and made him flee to his bed before midnight, I will attempt to answer your question.

I think Transliteration is mostly a word-for-word translation i.e.
El elephante grande = The Elephant Big

Translation: The Big Elephant.

Another timely example:

Dave árboles de banano son mucho más grande que Michael.
Transliteration:
Dave trees of banana are very more big what Michael.

Translation:

Michael cries every night because his nanner trees are flaccid and because Cathy gives Dave pie.

You’re welcome.

Happy New Year from Camp Geezer ™

yo

26. Sobek - January 1, 2011

Transliteration means writing the sounds from one alphabet in another alphabet. For example, “berosheit bara’ ‘elohim eth ha-shamayim va eth he-‘eretz” is a transliteration of Gen. 1:1. I haven’t rendered the phrase into English, but I have written the sounds made by the Hebrew alphabet in the Roman alphabet. The translation is “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Yes, it’s true; that’s the kind of book I ask for as a Christmas present. I know how to party like a rock star.

27. Retired Geezer - January 1, 2011

I just realized that today is 1.1.11

*does some figuring

On September 10th it will be 9.10.11

On October 11th, in 2 years, it will be 10.11.12

Numbers are cool.

28. lauraw - January 1, 2011

Hey Geezer, let’s have an IB party on 11/11/11.
It will be a Friday night, and Veteran’s Day.

Happy New Year, fakey internet friends!
And Happy New Year to the rest of you, too. 😉

29. Retired Geezer - January 1, 2011

Sure….

Michael’s house?

30. lauraw - January 1, 2011

Yep. Front lawn.
I’ll bring the shovels and the charcoal for the pork pit.

31. daveintexas - January 1, 2011

or the stump

32. Retired Geezer - January 1, 2011

Can’t we use his Mr. Lamm’s fancy BBQ thingy?

33. geoff - January 1, 2011

Can’t we use his Mr. Lamm’s fancy BBQ thingy?

I was gonna convert that into some backup outdoor facilities IYKWIMAITTYD.

34. Cathy - January 1, 2011

I’m finally alive.

Good Morning and Happy New Year.

Wow. What a party. New post up soon.

35. lauraw - January 1, 2011

Can’t we use his Mr. Lamm’s fancy BBQ thingy?

But then we won’t get to meet the head of his Homeowner’s Association.

I heard those people really like a good front yard pig roast.

36. daveintexas - January 1, 2011

if you cook a pig in the ground you have luck all year long

Michael - January 1, 2011

Please do not dig the pork pit near the palm trees.

37. Michael - January 1, 2011

But then we won’t get to meet the head of his Homeowner’s Association.

We’ll just give him some meat. Cathy, by the way, is now on the board of directors of the HOA, recruited by that “head” you mentioned. She’s also the Chairperson of the Social Committee, which is why the recent Texas Roadhouse neighborhood party was at our house.

I’ve been lobbying her to get rid of some stop signs that make no sense and really annoy me, and which I always run anyway.

Along with her Tea Party position and her being a Precinct Chair and convention delegate for the GOP, she’s getting to be a serious power broker. Politicians around here return her call.

38. daveintexas - January 1, 2011

I hate those fucking stop signs. Except I don’t come there often enough to be truly annoyed. Give he a hacksaw and let’s see some action on this important thing.

39. Cathy - January 1, 2011

I don’t like the stop signs either, but we have to listen to a lot of griping at our meetings. I’m just sorta logging my time before I start griping about my pet issues.

Meetings are great, btw. We serve wine and finger foods. Not bad.

*new poat up that you won’t wanna miss*
