The Panyee Football Club March 21, 2011

Thanks to ScottW for a link to a heartwarming and inspirational video that comes from a tiny Muslim fishing village in Southern Thailand.  The village mostly floats beside a striking island called Koh Panyee in Phang Nga Bay.

There is only a tiny bit of flat ground, and most of that is occupied by a mosque.  The rest of the town floats on the water.  They have a couple of great seafood restaurants that cater to tourists who are viewing the awesome scenery of the bay by boat.  (You have seen this area in movies like The Man With the Golden Gun, Cutthroat Island and The Beach.)  Thus, Cathy, the kids and I happened to have stopped here for lunch in the mid-1990s.  Here’s our pic of the village you will see in the video below (click to enlarge):

Given the lack of land, you can imagine that starting a soccer team was a problem.  There was simply no place to play. Hence, the following story:

Bonus vacation pic below the break, which is on display in the Batcave today.

Awesome story. Thanks for sharing it with us, Scott. I so want to go back to Thailand and visit these folks again.

2. daveintexas - March 20, 2011

I can’t do five minutes on the vid, but the vacation pic is awesome.

Incidentally, what the fuck is the occasional sound noise coming from this site?

3. daveintexas - March 20, 2011

*just kidding, I watched it. sweet.

4. Cathy - March 20, 2011

Incidentally, what the fuck is the occasional sound noise coming from this site?

Yea. Happens to me too. THINK it’s audio from the Livestream of Iowa Bald Eagle’s nest… seems to pop in and take over and then pop out.

5. Michael - March 20, 2011

If you start the eagle livestream on the sidebar, sometimes the sound is intermittent. Mostly it’s just wind noise, although somebody near the nest owns a motorcycle. Last night you could hear the rainstorm. Even with an infrared camera, the poor eagle looked pretty bedraggled. Just lower the volume to nothing if you don’t like it.

6. daveintexas - March 20, 2011

well fix it goddammit.

7. daveintexas - March 20, 2011

ok this is annoying as hell *shutting down this tab. Takes a flamethrower to this place.

8. Michael - March 20, 2011

Dave, you have four options:

1. Don’t start the livestream. It does not start by itself.

2. If you start it and it gets annoying, pause it, or refresh the page,

3. Use the volume control for the livestream, which is that little thing that looks like a speaker at bottom right, or

4. Avoid the sound altogether by going outside to scan the ground where your puny little nanner trees have not yet emerged.

9. daveintexas - March 20, 2011

you suck.

10. Michael - March 20, 2011

You probably should go buy some more nanner trees and start over. I mean, if they haven’t come up by now, when mine are popping up all over, that freeze musta killed them. Darn shame, I say.

11. lauraw - March 20, 2011

I have not started the livestream and I still automatically get that white noise for a couple seconds when I try to load a page here.

12. BrewFan - March 20, 2011

Everything works just fine for me on this blog. Don’t change a thing, Michael.

13. wiserbud - March 20, 2011

happens to me too. Must be an inner circle thing.

14. Michael - March 20, 2011

This could be an IE vs. Firefox issue. I don’t know. I’ll move the widget backstage for now. Maybe we can bring it back when there are some hatchlings to look at.

15. Michael - March 20, 2011

Better now?

16. wiserbud - March 20, 2011

Better now?

Who cares?

17. Michael - March 20, 2011

Hey Wiser, have I mentioned lately that you suck?

No?

You suck. Somebody better be watching your back in St. Louis.

18. lauraw - March 20, 2011

Loaded right up! Thanks Michael. Maybe just post a link?

19. BrewFan - March 20, 2011

You shouldn’t pander to the whiners Michael. They’re never satisfied. Would you like me to read you some Vietnamese poetry?

20. lauraw - March 20, 2011

*snuggles with Brewfan for 45 seconds*

21. Michael - March 20, 2011

Maybe just post a link?

The link is in the post by Russ below.

You can just find that by yourself. This is the thanks I get for trying to do something new and original in the IB sidebar with a really cool widget. Some of you obviously need to update your software and RAM.

*sulks*

*kicks dog and mutters*

*goes outside to look at nanner tree sprouts*

22. daveintexas - March 20, 2011

>> Some of you obviously need to update your software and RAM.

Yeah. It’s probably us.

homo.

23. Michael - March 20, 2011

Thank you, Brewfan, for sticking with me through the Eagle Widget Ordeal™. I appreciate your loyalty, notwithstanding Laura’s attempt to seduce you with a squishy hug. Especially because you are an IT professional with a computer that is not a piece of shit. Thank you.

24. BrewFan - March 20, 2011

*snuggles with Brewfan for 45 seconds*

Hey! I’ve never had to wear handcuffs and a blindfold to snuggle before!

25. Lipstick - March 20, 2011

My cell phone provider is about to be taken over by Michael, Inc.

26. BrewFan - March 20, 2011

Thank you, Brewfan, for sticking with me through the Eagle Widget Ordeal™.

You’re welcome. Some people just aren’t ready for the leading edge of technology I guess.

27. Michael - March 20, 2011

Michael, Inc. spent the recession shoring up its balance sheet and cutting costs, in order to do deals like that when the time was right. The execs told us it was coming. We have always been the most predatory company in our sector.

28. daveintexas - March 20, 2011

IT guys. Latent fags.

29. Michael - March 20, 2011

You gotta admit, it takes brass balls to pursue this deal with Obama’s FCC and Justice Department. They are not friendly to big businesses.

The political upside is — we’re kicking the Germans (Deutsche Telekom) off our airwaves, and the cost efficiencies are huge. T-Mobile can’t really afford to keep up with the next-gen broadband wireless race. This deal will ultimately benefit consumers.

31. Michael - March 20, 2011

Don’t worry, Pupster. I’ll bet Verizon is talking to Sprint right now.

Heh. Good luck with that integration.

32. Pupster - March 20, 2011

AT&T: There is no escape. Don’t make me destroy you.

33. wiserbud - March 20, 2011

Hey Wiser, have I mentioned lately that you suck?

Who cares?

34. Cathy - March 21, 2011

Some people just aren’t ready for the leading edge of technology I guess.

Guess SOME of us work on old technology to save money for hookers and booze.

35. Mitchell - March 21, 2011

FARK.com headline submitter wins the Internets: “AT&T is getting married to T-Mobile. There will be no reception afterwards.”

HA!

36. sandy burger - March 21, 2011

Lack of land? Just TNT that big rock and pave the island.

By the way, if you want a wild time in Thailand, check out the Vegetarian Festival in Phuket. I’ve never seen anything like it. Those Chinese-Thais really know how to put on a parade.

37. skinbad - March 22, 2011

Finally watched it. Good stuff.
