Allen West Is Not Backing Down! April 2, 2011

Posted by Cathy in Heroes, Honor, News, Politics.

When asked what kind of  reception he’d like for lunch with supporters, U.S. Congressman Allen West (FL)  said Texas BBQ. Delighted to be dressed in jeans and boots he joined us for lunch at Sammy’s BBQ in downtown Dallas.

U.S. Congressman Allen West (FL)

The venue was classic for Texas. A tent-like structure adjoins the building filled with outdoor tables and chairs. Wooden paper towel holders are the only table decorations. But the food and Texas friendly service were good and memorable.

The lunch crowd was a mix in age, culture,  and background,  including Tea Party pals and Conservatives. I was delighted sit across from former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and his lovely wife Laura.  I’ve met both of them but was happy to enjoy a chat and make it through without BBQ sauce on face or clothing. After lunch, Congressman West spoke to us sans-teleprompter sharing these thoughts in his inspiring message:

  • We are on a precipice above an abyss. What we do in the coming months will determine whether or not we are able to move away from danger or fall in and watch our nation be lost.
  • In the short time in Washington D.C. I’m realizing that truth means nothing to this administration. Truth, for them, is what they want it to be.  Spending money while refusing to consider consequences must stop and stop now.
  • We are spending 4-6 billion dollars each day. The present cuts that are being considered are simply not enough. We must set the bar much higher and do more. In Airborne school I learned that when you set the bar low then you jump low. We can do better. We are Americans. We have a legacy of taking on challenges and succeeding. We must do more.  Right now, forty-two cents of every dollar we spend is borrowed money. Twenty nine percent of our debt is held by China. That should scare each of us.  We do not have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem.
  • Our opponents are banking on fear. They hope Republicans will go along with their games.  They have refused to work with us. They are threatening to shut down the government and pin the blame on Republicans. This has worked in the past, but it will not work this time. Those Republican congressmen who cooperated with the Democrats in the last round got an ear-full from their constituents. They won’t make that mistake again. The fight next week will be very interesting. You watch. We are going to find the courage to do this because we know we serve the people.
  • I consider the elections of 2010 an enabling operation but the real fight will be the elections of 2012. The real fight is yet to come. It’s no time to back down. I liken where we are now to the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, where Major General John Buford employed his forward defense. When hearing news of advancing Confederate forces, Buford used quick thinking and skilled leadership to gain strategic advantage by taking Seminary Ridge before the end of the day. This was the decisive high ground needed for the Union forces to be able to fend off repeated and furious Confederate offensives in the days that followed. He did not back down.
  • Well I’m not backing down on this either. I’m not going to let you people down. I have to be able to go home and face the people and know that I was true to our guiding principles.  I was in the military for many years. I fought as a soldier, and packed a duffel and ruck sack. I did it to protect all of you, your life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.  I wear a suit now. There’s no duffel or ruck sack, but this is the same fight.

Congressman West is a fighter and comfortable using the word fight. He views his job as protecting citizens. I’m confident he’ll do it. No backing down.  He says government has been feeding off victims and treating us citizens like children, that we are adults, and we deserve better.  I’m confident his military experience, leadership and passion will  inspire others to believe America deserves and can do better. He’s not alone in this fight. Yes. This is a fight.

Honored to be Sharing My Gratitude and Giving Him a Hug

I’m gonna sleep better tonight.

1. osoloco - April 2, 2011

Very cool.

2. lauraw - April 2, 2011

Oh, Cathy. Great day for you, and great post!!

3. Blackiswhite, Imperial Consigliere - April 2, 2011

Excellent. We need more of them who understand this. And more who will stand up to the others and give them what for when they forget to dance with them what brung ’em.

4. Russ from Winterset - April 2, 2011

This is why I’m skeptical of all the people who want West to run for President right now.

He’s just what we freakin’ need in Congress, so why fight it? Let him finish cleaning up the House of Representatives before we send him off to the White House. All he needs now is about 40 or 50 more ass-kickers like him, and he’ll get the job done.

5. Michael - April 2, 2011

AOSHQ actually pointed West out to me, and I gave him money. So now I get his newsletter, which is actually worth reading. It’s not just Washington politics, about which he is viciously honest, it’s also about how he bikes along the beach in the morning with his pals in Florida and meets people from all over the country.

You can tell he is kinda amazed and dumbfounded by his sudden celebrity status, and he is totally committed to not getting absorbed by the D.C. social system of Georgetown cocktail parties with Arianna Huffington as the resident princess.

6. Michael - April 2, 2011

In other words, I want to have Allen West’s baby.

7. Michael - April 2, 2011

*thinks that over*

OK, Cathy should have Allen West’s baby.

8. Michael - April 2, 2011

Well, that is probably not a good idea either.

Hey Kevlarchick, do you want to have Allen West’s baby?

Cathy says he is hot, FWIW.

9. GMLand - April 2, 2011

Congrats Cathy! I would love to sit down and share a beer or ten with him.

10. Michael - April 2, 2011

I am actually curious about this. How many IB commenters want to have Allen West’s baby?

I know Brewfan does, that’s obvious. But, who else?

11. Michael - April 2, 2011

Hey, this could be a poll.

*edits post*

12. Blackiswhite, Imperial Consigliere - April 2, 2011

Nah. I’m saving myself for Cathy. I think she is better connected.

13. Cathy - April 2, 2011

It was a great day. Thanks, Guys.

And thanks to my hubby, Michael for encouraging me to attend.

14. lauraw - April 2, 2011

Tomorrow morning I’m going to email Allen West and congratulate him for meeting Cathy.

I’m going to tell him to count that among his many lucky blessings.

15. Cathy - April 2, 2011

*can’t believe my goofball hubby added a polldaddy*

16. Cathy - April 2, 2011

*hugs Lauraw*

17. doc - April 2, 2011

Cool post, Cathy. You are moving in pretty impressive circles. Congressman West most definitely gets it.

18. wiserbud - April 2, 2011

I want to hug Cathy even more than usual, just to get some o’ that Allen West hug on me……

19. Jay in Ames - April 3, 2011

That’s awesome, Cathy, thanks for the post! It’s great to experience someone that has his head on straight.

20. Rosetta - April 3, 2011

Hahahaha. This post is outstanding for a bunch of reasons. Not least of which is seeing Cathy and Allen West together.

Also, best poll ever.

Allen West is one of those people that, were he on the other side of the political aisle, it would make me question the side I’m on. He’s like Dick Cheney like that.

Allen West & Cathy Ladybug – 2012

21. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX - April 3, 2011

My, my, my Mizz Cathy, you sure do get around! How very exciting to get to hang out with Congressman Pure Awesomeness! Don’t wash that shirt – bring it to the STL meet-up so we can all touch it like rock star groupies….

22. kevlarchick - April 3, 2011

Yes, I will have Allen West’s baby.
You don’t need to ask twice. But I’m thinking he has eyes only for our beautiful Cathy.

23. Retired Geezer - April 3, 2011

I’m in.

24. wamk - April 3, 2011

I’ve been thinking that the next Presidential ticket will need to have someone well versed in finance to handle those challenges with our deficit, and someone with a military background to handle the unrest around the World.

A few years ago, I was saying Romney and Petreaus, now it’s looking more like Christie/Ryan and West to me..

Perhaps 2012 can mark the first election where the VP actually does something?

25. wamk - April 3, 2011

Forgot to ask: is West short, or is Cathy 5’10”?

26. Cathy - April 3, 2011

Cathy is 5’5″ and wearing flats at this event.

27. daveintexas - April 3, 2011

I met West when he was a light bird in command of an artillery battalion at Ft. Hood, a year before he when to Iraq and saved his soldiers from an ambush by scaring the shit out of a bad guy by shooting his pistol next to him. The guy coughed up the info.

He was a soldier’s soldier, carried that aura of command with ease and confidence. Tough SOB. His win in Florida was the best thing about the November elections to me.

He said he’d go through hell carryin two cans of gasoline for his soldiers, and I believe him.

28. Mitchell - April 3, 2011

Very cool!

In other news, I have a cozy for my Marie Sharp’s hot sauce and you do not.

29. Cathy - April 3, 2011

He said he’d go through hell carryin two cans of gasoline, and I believe him.

Awesome DAVE!!! Thanks for your story. After meeting him and listening to him, I believe that two cans of gasoline are about all he would need.

I don’t see me doing that alone, but I’d follow him into hell if called to do it.

30. Cathy - April 3, 2011

In other news, I have a cozy for my Marie Sharp’s hot sauce and you do not.

Yes, Mitchell. You are way cooler. I’m not worthy. Love your cozy! Bwaaaaahahahahah!

31. Cathy - April 3, 2011

Yes, I will have Allen West’s baby. You don’t need to ask twice. But I’m thinking he has eyes only for our beautiful Cathy.

Glad you are volunteering for the baby-making Kevl. Not my ‘area’ anymore.

And you might be misreading the look on Allen West’s face. I had just been introduced to him by a politically connected gal, a friend, who organized this event. She told him I’m someone he needs to get to know because I’m Tea Party and a firecracker. I think he was simply taking all that in.

32. daveintexas - April 3, 2011

He got screwed by the Army over that Cathy. They opened and investigation and tried to court martial him, eventually reducing it to an Article 15, so he retired with full benefits, but his Army career was over.

Our gain now.

West will tell you they never had another ambush on his soldiers after that.

33. Cathy - April 3, 2011

^ Recall hearing something about that, but appreciate the clarification, Dave.

Yea. Our gain now.

34. Michael - April 3, 2011

Thanks for sharing the pic, Mitchell. It is now our March 30 post.

35. daveintexas - April 3, 2011

Yeah, I guess the point being, he knew he’d get in trouble for it, and he didn’t give a shit. Cared more for his men than his career.

36. Cathy - April 3, 2011

Cared more for his men than his career.

Yea. Term career military is not necessarily a good thing.

37. Bonnie Liebmann - April 3, 2011

I don’t even drink beer but if he wanted me to, I’d have one with him…

38. BrewFan - April 3, 2011

Mark voted three times so far.

39. BrewFan - April 3, 2011

Very Important Update™ made to the Koozy post!

Michael - April 3, 2011

I don’t even drink beer but if he wanted me to, I’d have one with him…

Um, Bonnie, that was not the question. If you were a real conservative, you would be willing to have his baby.

I mean, I volunteered, and I don’t really think he’s all that hot.

40. Cathy - April 3, 2011

*will stay up late tonight wondering how Michael commented without having #40 automatically generated*

41. Cathy - April 3, 2011

Mark voted three times so far.

You’re a keeper, Brew.

42. Michael - April 3, 2011

Brewfan voted three times from different computers to say he wanted to have Allen West’s baby, so he is as much of a cheater as Mark.

Maybe it wasn’t different computers. Brewfan is a pretty smart guy. I suspect he knows how to delete the Polldaddy cookie that stops you from voting more than once from the same IP address.

43. Michael - April 3, 2011

Oh, now you are thinking, “Hey, I wonder if Michael has been rigging the Polldaddy results?”

Of course I have.

Look, the whole concept of “free and fair elections” is an anachronism. During the Lutheran Millenium™, we will decide if and when there is an election, and we will decide the result in your own best interests. I can tell you right now that you are going to vote overwhelmingly in favor of tuna noodle casserole as your favorite food, because we love you.

44. Vmaximus - April 3, 2011

Awesome Cathy!

45. Lipstick - April 3, 2011

Very very cool!

46. Michael - April 3, 2011

What I really like about this post is the first pic, with Allen standing in front of two rolls of paper towels.

That is so Texas it hurts.

You can’t see it in the pic, but I guarantee there were pickles, raw onion, and fresh bread on the table.

47. Cathy - April 3, 2011

You can’t see it in the pic, but I guarantee there were pickles, raw onion, and fresh bread on the table.

Not this time, Batman, but you’re close. Those were on the fixins table against the wall.

48. westforwestwing2012 - April 4, 2011

What was Allen doing in the great state of Texas??

49. Fritz - April 4, 2011

This is so cool to see people outside Florida 22 learning about Allen West. I had the privilege to campaign for him here in Florida. This country’s salvation rests with men and women like Congressman West. Support them with every breath in your body because they are doing the same for us!

50. rld77 - April 4, 2011

Cathy– My first time here, but won’t be my last. Came here from Ace’s site. Thanks for Giving West more exposure– good for us all.—rld

51. Cathy - April 4, 2011

What was Allen doing in the great state of Texas??

He was gracing us with his presence, inspiring us, and raising money. He’s our kind of leader and represents the kind of values that are common in Texas. We will win this fight if we partner with conservatives in states like Florida and Arizona.

52. mare - April 4, 2011

Cathy, this is just terrific. Well done!

53. mare - April 4, 2011

Oh, and I like your hair (and outfit).

54. BackwardsBoy - April 4, 2011

Have his baby? Hmm, not sure about that, but maybe we could clone him? OK, I’ll vote anyway.

We are damned lucky to have him on our side. I’d carry a spare can of gas for him.

55. Edward von Bear - April 4, 2011

48: Allen West was kicking ass and taking names, that’s what

56. Mark in NJ - April 4, 2011

I actually haven’t voted yet, so I can’t tell you who those other 10 liberal douchebags are.

I gotta admit, it’s hard not to like this guy. Not sure about having his baby though — I’m too old for the two I already have.

57. Cowboy - April 4, 2011

Here from AOSHQ too, Cathy. I like the site and will bookmark it. Thanks for the great post.

58. westforwestwing2012 - April 4, 2011

Many thousands of us all over America have known about Allen West for quite a while — THANKS to the many months of hard work on the part of you and the other folks in FL-22! The rest of the nation will always be grateful to you people, who had the vision to see what an awesome person you had on your hands there, and worked so hard to give him to the country!

59. Cathy - April 4, 2011

Thanks folks. I’m a believer in political partnerships based upon principles.

Our Tea Party Principles are limited government, liberty to make our own decisions, fiscal responsibility, restoration of the rule of law, holding representatives accountable and advocacy for a secure and sovereign nation. These principles resonate with a LOT of conservatives who may or may not consider themselves Tea party people.

60. Tushar - April 4, 2011

I want to have Allen West’s baby. I will raise it like my own. Don’t know if he would be willing to give up his offspring though.

61. daveintexas - April 4, 2011

I’m done with babies, but I am willing to contribute to the cause, or pre-qualify applicants.

62. JR - April 4, 2011

Too late to have his baby, but if it counts that I’d like to have his baby, consider this my vote. Hell, my husband would like to have his baby. LOL

63. geoff - April 5, 2011

Finally did my long-promised debt post over at Ace’s. So I’m not a total deadbeat. Really.

64. Cathy - April 5, 2011

Thanks, Geoff-the-not-total-deadbeat.

65. lauraw - April 5, 2011

Please distribute geoff’s post and chart far and wide! It needs max coverage!

66. Cathy - April 5, 2011

Thanks Lauraw… you beat me to it. ((huggz))

67. Michael - April 5, 2011

Geoff’s post has been picked up by Hot Air and Instapundit. You did a great job, Geoff-the-not-total-deadbeat.

Cathy has emailed it to the local Tea Party and politicians that she knows.

I think Mark Levin has seen it. Heard him ranting an hour ago about how it will take at least 20 years to undo the mess that Obama has made. Hmmmm, that’s the point of the chart Geoff just posted.

68. Michael - April 5, 2011

Levin’s point, by the way, was that we can’t “negotiate” with these people. The job is to “stop them dead in their tracks.”

69. lauraw - April 5, 2011

70. Michael - April 5, 2011

Levin also was funny mocking Obama’s attempt to posture as the “referee” in the budget debate. According to Levin, Obama is the worst possible person to make such a claim — “incompetent, a political hack, and an ideologue.”

71. Catherine - April 6, 2011

Can you all wait to see Obummer and West in a debate? It will be sooooo humbling for Obummer. I await in baited breath!!!!

72. Mitchell - April 6, 2011

*Pokes blog with stick*

Must be pining for the fjords.

73. Retired Geezer - April 6, 2011

*pokes Mitchell’s avatar with a stick*

What happened to Wez?

74. Mitchell - April 6, 2011

Firefox 4 grokketh not the avatar.
