A Few Thoughts on My Recent Decision Not to Buy a Soviet T-72 Tank May 10, 2011

Posted by Sobek in Ballistics.

Let’s face it, guys (and, almost certainly KevlarChick), we’ve all been there: we go to the Kia dealer for some routine maintenance and some slick salesman oozes up to you and somehow, without your even realizing how, you’re standing in front of a Cold War-era T-72 main battle tank, pamphlet in hand, the salesweasel’s polished speech at once painting mental images of glorious, steel-crushing terror and the deep sense of shame if you back away, to drive back home in your sensible, non-lethal Optima.

MSRP is $2 million, but I'm willing to let you drive off the lot in it today for $1.8 million if you buy the undercoating protection.

Now I’m not going to pretend it was easy for me to decide against the T-72.  I’m also not going to try to persuade you not to do it (except for KevlarChick; you need one of these right now).  I’m just going to put out a couple of ideas to keep in mind before your bust out your limited-edition Dirty Dozen credit card and swipe on the dotted line.

I could have called this post: Nude Justin Beiber crashes Hang Glider into Britney Spears.
You know… just to drive traffic and possibly add Teh Vatican to our Flag Counter.
But being the honest person that I am, I won’t even mention Lady Gaga nude photos of horrific accident.

This is funny as heck but might not be Safe For Work due to Language.

I own one of those drum thingies (Bodhran) that the dude is playing.

Notes from Site Administration:

1. I turned this post into a slide show, using my magic Site Administrator skilz.
2. West Texas is not really renowned for its scenic beauty. I don’t know why Dave posted this.
3. Dave’s truck recently had it’s registration renewed, meaning it passed the Texas vehicle inspection. Note the blue sticker on the lower left corner of his windshield. This is a cause for celebration in his part of Texas, where most of the trucks are stolen, unregistered, and belch blue smoke when they exceed 45 mph.

My Grace Is Sufficient For Thee May 7, 2011

We sang this song, Blessed Be Your Name, in church a few weeks ago and it struck a chord because earlier that week I read this article by Marcia Morrissey. Not every calamity that befalls us is related to how much faith we have nor is the relief from that calamity proportional to our faith. Quite the opposite is true; the closer we grow to the Lord the more likely we will be persecuted for our faith. In our culture persecution really is a social acceptance issue but in other cultures that persecution becomes a matter of life and death.

The Apostle Paul was afflicted with an unknown malady that was vexing enough for him to write, “Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Cor 12: 8-10)

The essence of faith is being able to trust the Lord enough that when afflicted we assume that our affliction will be used for His glory somehow, someway. This is not easy because we don’t think ‘eternally’. When we lose a loved one in the Lord, for instance, it is hard for us to remember that in God’s economy we’re going to be reunited one day and we will have that person for eternity. This perspective is also hard when we are hurt, physically or emotionally by those we love or we witness a tragedy so profound we say, “how can a loving God allow that to happen?” But when we think eternally we remember that man and his free-will choices are the cause and that God has promised to one day wipe away every tear from the eyes of those who love Him.
