Weird Al is Awesome June 24, 2011

I’ve always been a Weird Al Yankovic fan. He has a ton of talent, great ideas and excellent production values.

This is his newest parody:

Apparently someone whose career is Circling the Drain, declined to give Al permission to use the song on his new album.

THE GAGA SAGA

I was really hoping that this blog entry would be all about me announcing the release date of my new album.

Sadly, it’s not.

In a metaphorical nutshell, here’s what happened.

I wrote and recorded what I thought was going to be the first single off of my new album: a parody of “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga called “Perform This Way.” But after hearing it, Lady Gaga decided not to give me permission to release the song, so… it won’t be coming out commercially anytime in the near future. Sorry.

Here’s Al’s blog where he explains in detail. Don’t miss the part where he explains that he was going to donate all the proceeds from the song to the Human Rights Campaign.

I was reasonably sure that my parody wasn’t really going to offend anybody… but I still decided, as an act of good karma, that I would donate all the money from sales of the song and music video to the Human Rights Campaign.

Full Disclosure: I did the (Las Vegas segment) Lighting on Weird Al’s parody of James Brown’s video, Living in America. Al’s version was titled, “Living With a Hernia”.

*UPDATE: Thanks to Joe in MD for the heads up.

Apparently it was her manager who denied the parody (after baiting Weird Al along!), and lied about who made the decision.

Weird Al is actually very talented. Now if he would just do something with the hair. Awful.

Thanks, Joe. I updated the post.

heh heh heh. Check out the comments, especially the one made at about 12:43 on June 24th at Geez’s link re: the decline of Gaga’s CD sales……

He went to school on guys like Spike Jones and Allan Sherman (Camp Granada), taking popular songs and making funny with the lyrics. They did some live shows too. But Weird Al took it to a whole new level with video and he is hilarious.

Sometimes it wasn’t lyrics, it was just burps and clicks and silly.

Appears that someone does not like others not taking her seriously about not taking others seriously.

My first concert was Weird Al at Astroworld in Houston.

Even Metallica pales in comparison.

Seeing Weird Al has got to be on my to do list. He’s had an amazing career, outlasting most of the “stars” he’s parodied.
