Allow me to vent August 23, 2012

Posted by digitalbrownshirt in Family, Heroes, Personal Experiences, Stupid shit, WTF?.

Do you know what I find offensive? Soccer moms, driving gigantic SUV’s (an Excursion to be exact) with “Support Our Troops” and “God Bless America” plastered on the back that are absolutely horrified at the prospect of their 18 year old daughter going out with one of those troops because they just aren’t the kind of people she wants around her daughter.

The kid met a girl that seemed absolute perfect for him. She likes hunting, country music and video games. She’s tall and athletic. Her Conservative parents are involved in the Tea Party, 2nd Amendment groups, charities and church. She even told him up front that she’s saving it for marriage which amazingly my 23 year old son has also been doing. The only problem he had with her was the age difference. They’d both be Freshmen in college this year, but he got delayed by that whole “fighting for freedom” thing. She seemed like she really liked him a lot and he liked her back. The funny thing is the fact that since both of those kids were raised right they’re honoring her mother’s wishes.

Apparently mom found out about their budding friendship, took one look at his “friends” on Facebook (almost all of them GI’s) and decided the age difference and his “friends” were just not going to fit into her daughter’s future. She supported the troops in theory, but apparently in reality she found them to be a bunch of foul mouth, drunken thugs that killed people for a living. All true, but that doesn’t make them bad people.

Brian is the best man I’ve ever known and he’s not good enough to be part of their family.  Utter bullshit.

1. BrewFan - August 23, 2012

Sounds like Brian dodged a bullet. I know it is easier said then done but he needs to not take it personally and be thankful he didn’t end up with a wife who has such domineering parents. Those relationships almost always are doomed from the beginning.

Also, when are we going to do some MW3? I know your schedule is rough but give me some days/times and I’ll find a way to make it happen. Mitchell, Geezer? what say youse guys?

2. Violet - August 23, 2012

No one needs a mother-in-law like that.

3. geoff - August 23, 2012

Give it a little time. Momma’s puppet strings will be cut when her daughter hits college, and the young lady will be making her own decisions.

4. aliceaitch - August 23, 2012

BrewFan and Violet are right, your kid dodged a bullet. And there are plenty of parents out there – even liberal ones – who are a-ok with their daughters dating a soldier as long as he’s a good man. One of my friends is a Boulder liberal, I never thought he’d be fine with his daughter dating a soldier, but she ended up marrying one and the whole family adores him and he’s slowly turning the entire family into warmongering conservathugs whose guns you’ll pry out of their cold dead hands.

More than one fish in the sea.

6. digitalbrownshirt - August 23, 2012

He’s actually getting out next month. He’s planning on becoming a Physicians Assistant with a lot of help from the GI Bill.

He actually seems better about this than I am. I just hate to see him get hurt again, especially by somebody that doesn’t even bother to meet him before passing judgement. He’s been through so much this year. Right after they got back from Helmand one of his buddies got killed in a hit and run motorcycle wreck. They’d only been home a couple of months when it happened.

Brewfan: Late Friday work for you? I can be on 10pm-until early Saturday morning. I’m on 3rd shift now but have Friday night off.

7. Retired Geezer - August 23, 2012

MW3… love to get my ass kicked by you guys but Friday is the pre-release date for Guild Wars 2. I’ll be trying to grab some cool Character names at the starting bell.

I’m even going to miss the Styx concert to stay home on the computer.

We saw Creedence Clearwater Revisited tonight. Excellent show!
Did I mention we saw Weird Al Yankovick on Tuesday?
We get great concerts at the Western Idaho Fair for the $5 price of admission.

Oh, and I milked a cow.

8. digitalbrownshirt - August 23, 2012

I’d love to see WAY in concert.

The worst mistake a young man can make is to get involved with a girl who has a weird mother.

Just. Don’t. Do. It.

10. lauraw - August 24, 2012

This thing of respecting the mother’s wishes on who is good enough to see her adult daughter, seems quite odd to me, but I guess we all know there are different cultural methods to this sort of thing.

I hope she brings a dirty hairy dipshit beatnik home for Thanksgiving.

11. Pupster - August 24, 2012

I wouldn’t sweat it too much DBS. When he starts working in the medical field he is going to need his hip waders. I do a lot of work for hospitals and medical centers. Ay chi wah wah.

12. digitalbrownshirt - August 24, 2012

I suspect that her parents paying for her college has something to do with it. As long as somebody else is paying the bills they’ve got a hold on you. She seems like a good kid, hopefully she won’t turn out like her mom.

*geezer has momentary flashback of wife #2*

Weird Al was a crowd pleaser. He had a huge video screen behind the band, where he played videos during a bunch of costume changes.
The band members all dressed like Amish farmers during Al’s song, Amish Paradise. Pretty funny with the crowd all waving their arms in unison.

OK, here’s Al doing “I Perform this way”

15. daveintexas - August 24, 2012

They’re kids dbs (although your kid is a man-kid, on account of his experience and service).

Kids will find their way. I hope his heart is not broken, but I bet you and I lived through some broken hearts. I know I did.

*retasked comment*

16. BrewFan - August 24, 2012

I’m not sure where you are at but I’ll be on at 10:00 central tonight.

17. digitalbrownshirt - August 24, 2012

BrewFan: I’m in Oklahoma. I’ll be on the same time. I need to get on a little early to load a few months worth of updates.

dave: I know he’ll get over it, they were just starting to date, but the idea of being rejected based on having a bunch of Marines and Sailors for friends was pretty irritating for him. If he wasn’t dealing with so much other stuff right now it would be a lot easier.

18. digitalbrownshirt - August 24, 2012

Brewfan: It appears that I won’t be playing MW3 tonight. My son borrowed it and we can’t find it. He’s blind as a bat right now after getting LASIK this afternoon. Then when I went to send you a message on XBL I couldn’t find the wire that goes from the mic to the controller (I haven’t used it in a few months). I’ll find them this weekend I’m sure.

If I can’t find it before tonight I’m sure I could get it together by next weekend. Do you want to play at 10pm next Saturday? Maybe we could get Geezer to show up by then.

19. digitalbrownshirt - August 24, 2012

Make that next Friday, not Saturday.

20. Patton - August 25, 2012

“Brian is the best man I’ve ever known…”

That one, right there, tore me up. It speaks volumes, about both of you.

21. BrewFan - August 25, 2012

No probs, DBS. I figured something else came up. I’ll let you know a little later on in the week if I can be on late next Friday.

22. digitalbrownshirt - August 26, 2012

I found the MW3 disc this morning. I still need to find the mic wire, but we’ve got some extra headsets I could use in a pinch.

23. BrewFan - August 26, 2012

Was playing Hardcore Domination (sywm) last night and got caught in a spawn trap. it was on the Bootlegger map and if you know where the A flag is you know there are only 3 exit points from that position. The other team was using tac insert and had all three exits locked down. It was brutal. While I appreciate the teamwork of the other side it doesn’t seem like that is how the game is meant to be played.

24. daveintexas - August 26, 2012

DBS, my dad told me a lot of stuff in my 52 year life.

But every time he told me he was proud of me, well, that meant a lot.

25. sandy burger - August 26, 2012

BrewFan, that was the most obscene thing I’ve ever read on the internet.

26. BrewFan - August 27, 2012

Ha! It does kinda read like the voice over-intro to a bad ’70s porno take on a Mickey Spillane novel. Maybe “I, The Furry”?

27. digitalbrownshirt - August 27, 2012

I hate getting spawn trapped, but I can’t really hate people for using it to win. It’s not like they’re hacking the game to make it happen.

It would be really obscene if I were playing since I would be cursing the whole time. That’s why I rarely play when my wife is home.

28. nooneofanyimport - August 27, 2012

Never underestimate the hypocrisy of an overprotective parent with a preconceived notion of the life her child will lead. In Mom’s mind, the child does not even have separate mind or will, but rather is merely an extension of the mother herself.

Not that I have any experience with that.
