WaPo Tries to Blame Conservatives for Crime Rate Among the Poor May 4, 2014Posted by geoff in News.
Christopher Ingraham of the WaPo’s Wonkblog tries to slam conservatives, but completely whiffs:
Conservative commentators are still trying to stir up resentment over “makers and takers,” preying on anxieties among the wealthy about class warfare and a “kristallnacht” targeting the rich. The sad reality, as the chart above shows, is that poorer Americans are much more likely to be at the receiving end of violence against persons and property than wealthier ones.
You can see at once how poor his logical link is. First, he conflates a growing concern about the demonization of the 1% with actual crimes against people and property. Nothing to do with one another.
Second, even though we might be concerned about a “kristallnacht,” that doesn’t mean we’re not concerned about other crimes. We can actually hold two thoughts in our head at the same time – a feat that is apparently unimaginable to Mssr. Ingraham.
Third, conservatives are the ones who are tough on crime. All crime, whether it be against the richest or the poorest. When liberals start elevating consideration for criminals above that for victims, who is really harming the poor more?
Conservatives have a long history of supporting measures like mandatory sentencing, tougher penalties, and more law enforcement resources, all in order to reduce crime. We’re not the problem here.
