British student dies in ‘tragic’ kayaking accident in New Zealand
I hope when I die they don’t put scare quotes around “tragic.”
It was tragic, no need for the scare quotes. About 25 years ago I went in the water in Casco Bay when our guide took us out on the ocean side of an island. Despite a life jacket and a wet suit I was pretty hypothermic after the rescue. About 5 kayakers went in and he helped me last as I was judged, at that time anyway, to be the fittest tourist and able to wait. I felt drunk by the time we got ashore. We spent the afternoon on the island hiking and eating warm food around a campfire. Pretty scary adventure that gave me even more respect for the water.
