Listening to a screaming baby is annoying. However, I have compassion for the mother, tired and bedraggled, trying to calm a distraught kid, while the rest of the partners grumble at her.

“Doesn’t she know how obnoxious that is?”

Yes. She knows. She hears it, too. No, she can’t do anything about it, or else she would, but she’s trying. No, waiting until the baby turns 12 is not a viable option.

Well said, Sobek.

We had good luck with our kids by timing their bottles for ascent and descent. The sucking helped with the ear pain. Then you just have to make sure the Big 3 are taken care of: hunger, sleep, and boredom.

This, of course, leads to the corollary rule: parents should never be outnumbered by children on a flight. It also makes subjective time in the air pass very, very slowly.
