Sleep As Much As You Want December 13, 2015

A lot of news sources have picked up on an Australian study of lifestyle effects on health, with breathless headlines like:

Too much sleep is ‘AS bad for your health as smoking and drinking alcohol’: More than 9 hours a night means you’re ‘4 TIMES more likely to die early’

This, of course, is nonsense. If you go to the actual article, you find that the health risk factors are really:

  • Smoking + drinking ==> 2.8X health risk
  • Sleeping more than 9 hours ==> 1.44X health risk
  • SmokingĀ  + drinking + >9 hours ==> 3.48X health risk

By “health risk” they mean “risk of dying,” so it really has nothing to do with quality of life or actual health while you’re alive.

So my advice is to sleep as much as feels good to you.
