Russia Does What We Thought It Would Do December 28, 2015

Posted by geoff in News.

Nine years ago, when I started my own (now defunct) blog, I spent considerable time discussing the machinations of Russia and China to dislodge the US as the world’s sole superpower. I talked about their economic and military collaboration, their global movements, and their efforts to modernize and expand their military forces.

Nearly a decade later, as Instapundit would say, “All is proceeding as I have foreseen.”

For the first time in 24 years, the U.S. Navy’s intelligence branch has published an unclassified report warning against a rapidly rearming and increasingly aggressive Russian fleet.

And while the report—which the Navy intends for public consumption—has been years in the making, recent events have underscored just how serious its findings are. It’s becoming clearer by the day that, with the strong backing of President Vladimir Putin, the Russian navy is making a serious effort to challenge the world’s preeminent maritime power—the United States.

Unfortunately, foreknowledge doesn’t equal effective action, so all my prognostication has been pointless.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention China as well:

The Japanese government formally protested the entry of an armed Chinese government ship and two other vessels into waters that Japan claims as its own on Saturday, according to an official in the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is the first time that an armed Chinese vessel has intruded into the areas that Japan’s claims as its territory, the official said.

And Obama approves.

Just a goofy aside. It was many decades ago when I took Civics and learned about the Constitution in history classes, but I distinctly recall drumming up creative thoughts of a child wondering how bad could things get in this seemingly comfy place where I lived. Even as a kid, I came to the conclusion that the Constitution, decent people in government, and the Press would keep it from happening.

All those thoughts about how bad it could get — violations of the Constitution along with lawlessness and corruption paired with an uncaring, lazy, or stupid citizenry — have come to pass already. Now — I’m starting to imagine stuff that could eventually lead to life in amerika looking something like Mad Max.

Some positive notes:

The ‘Affluenza Boy’ has been apprehended in Mexico along with his b*tch of a mom and both will be returned home toTexas to face charges. Tarrant Count Sheriff says he needs to spend some time “big boy jail.”

Some are asking that the judge in that case who let the little rich boy go free with probation and then soon after retired should be investigated also.

Also, the recent tornadoes that hit DFW are making opportunities for the tons of great folks who live around here who are volunteering their time and resources to help the victims and aid in the recovery. Reports from the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and all the local police and fire departments say they can hardly keep up with the donations — but are grateful for what is coming in, because recovery will take many months.
