The US Falls Behind in Manikin Technology February 19, 2016

Posted by geoff in News.

Those Japanese roboticists have done it again, this time with the iDummy. iDummy is an adjustable manikin, presumably for people who need to sew things. Kind of hypnotically creepy. [The perpetual gifs are kind annoying, so I moved them below the fold]

Another dance video? I can’t do those moves.

Seriously though, regular manually adjustable dress forms are pretty expensive. I don’t even want to know how much a robotic one costs. Or why it’s even necessary.

It’s strangely alluring in a way, but then the dress reminds me of my first grade teacher. Discombobulating.

“Hey, you!. Take this quarter and go to the teacher’s lounge and get me a Tab. And don’t dilly-dally!”

I had a great day at work today. You ever just have one of those days where everything just hits?

5. geoff - February 19, 2016

My day was kind of the opposite of that.

6. Sobek - February 19, 2016

I have those days sometimes, too, Geoff. Sorry about yours.

7. Tushar - February 19, 2016

japan may be good at producing robots that look more like humans, but US is ahead when it comes to making practical robots. Japan had to use US made robots to handle Fukushima nuclear aftermath.

They build robots that look pretty. We* build robots that fucking get the job done.

*I am getting tired of the quandary I face every time I have to talk about US. Should I use ‘we’ or should I use ‘you’. Well, I am getting fingerprinted on Monday, and hopefully taking the oath soon. So the quandary should be over soon.

Welcome, Citizen.
I hope you can visit Camp Geezer some day.

Welcome aboard, Tushar (soon)!! But looking at those robots, some less savory applications come to mind. I think they’ll “get the job done.”

Congratulations, Tushar! Please bring over all your Republican-minded relatives, please. Thank you.
