Export Growth Continues to Defy President February 8, 2016

The president’s promise to double exports in 5 years expired almost a year ago. Even so, I’ve continued to track exports just to see if there’s any life there. After all, the president told us all that growing exports was a critical part of his economic recovery plan, so for him to take credit for the modest recovery we (belatedly) see today, you’d think that exports would eventually be showing strong growth.

But as with all things Obama, what he touches* turns to poop. Here’s your poop for the day:

*I don’t think he actually has to touch it. He can just look at it, or mention it, or walk by it…

Designated Driving; Extreme Precocious Style February 8, 2016

There were a lot of anti-drunk driving ads during the Super Bowl yesterday. Apparently one Wisconsin couple really took them to heart:

A drunk Wisconsin couple is facing felony charges after allegedly letting a nine-year-old girl drive them home in an attempt to avoid a DUI.

When Polk County deputies pulled the car over, they found Eggert’s nine-year-old daughter behind the wheel and an 11-month-old baby strapped in a car seat.

Where the Fox Lives February 6, 2016

Short answer: In the Pipe.

Mrs. Geezer sees this fox about once a week when she feeds the horses.

Her den is pretty close to the houses

Uh oh, spotted.

Ready to dive in the pipe. She probably has babies in there.

Manufacturing Jobs Continue to Disappoint President February 6, 2016

(Just kidding: he doesn’t really care)

The president loves to boast about his economic accomplishments, even though our weak gains are five years late, and even though every single economic policy he has enacted has been a failure. One of his big economic pushes was to add 1 million manufacturing jobs in 4 years. That’s a great idea, but he ever had the slightest idea of how to accomplish it.

Nor, I suspect, did he lose any sleep over it.

In September of this year it’ll be official, he’ll have broken his million manufacturing jobs promise. How can I be so confident? Well, here’s how he’s doing so far:

And that little uptick this past month is undoubtedly due to BLS seasonal adjustments.

Government is Just a Word for Doing Things Together… February 5, 2016

Posted by geoff in News.

Update: Looks like I screwed my very elementary division (per John Tyler’s helpful correction in the comments), and ended up accusing LA County of spending 10 times more per person than they really spent. Which says that they are actually pretty economical in their treatment of homeless people. Although it’s not clear that they included the budgets for the agencies that administer to those people – it looks like they just counted the actual services rendered. Regardless, you can safely discount the entire post below.

From Los Angeles:

Los Angeles County spends close to $1 billion a year caring for and managing homeless people, with a majority of the money going to their health needs, according to a new report.

Quite a bit of dough – how many people does that help?

The study, produced for the county chief executive office’s homeless initiative, examined costs for 150,000 single adults who experienced homelessness during a 12-month period in 2014-2015.

They didn’t bother to do the math, but that means it costs LA County $66,667 per year to deal with one homeless person. And at the end of that year, the number of homeless people hasn’t changed.

The poverty level for a single person is $11,770. The median income for a single person in 2012 was $27K. How can LA manage to dump that much money into the homeless situation and change nothing?

The answer, of course, lies in all the government mouths to feed along the way, and the inefficiency that always accompanies activities that aren’t driven by profit.

CTHD Sequel February 2, 2016

Posted by geoff in News.

Hadn’t heard about this until today, even though the trailer’s been out for almost 2 months. Yes, Netflix is releasing a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on February 26. For a guy like me (total wuxia fan boy), this is huge news. The rest of you probably don’t see it as a life-changer like I do, but surely it’ll have something for everybody. Like tons of nameless minions getting cut down and wossum swordy type stuff.

Plus, Michelle Yeoh.

Anyhow, only available on Netflix
