Godzilla Resurgence was released last month in Japan, and may be released in the US later this year. The movie prompted one Noger Chen to put together a comparison of all the Godzillas since 1954.

Have a slice of awesome:

You’ll note that this year’s version is more than 10 meters taller than the 2014 version, which is almost 8% more atomic goodness than ever before.

I’ve probably only seen 2 or 3 of the older movies and none of the newer ones.
What are your recommendations for the best 3?

The 2014 movie was very good – my favorite so far. Destroy All Monsters is a must, and I also liked Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster. Plus, anything with Mothra or Gamera is irresistible.

Steer clear of the 1998 one with Matthew Broderick, though.

I remember having a 20 story Godzilla painted (?) on the side of Bally’s hotel with the caption ‘Size Matters’.
Don’t know which movie it was for.

Did Gamera ever actually appear in a Godzilla movie? I always thought he was his own competing franchise.

I didn’t mean to imply that Gamera was together with Godzilla – I was just saying that any movie with Gamera was too fun to pass up.

I might be one of the only people on the planet that enjoyed the 1998 Godzilla movie. It wouldn’t be worth an $8 movie ticket, but I wouldn’t say it’s not worth watching as a 99 cent rental at Family Video. I went in with zero expectations and saw it as escapistist fluff that didn’t have to make any kind of sense. When I left I thought it had to be the most expensive commercial for Chevy ever made based on how much abuse that taxi cab took while still driving at top speed. It was just a big budget mess that happened to have Godzilla in the mix. Sure it didn’t make any sense, but we’re talking about a giant lizard attacking New York City, it didn’t make sense from the moment they wrote it down in the script.

I’ve always felt that any movie with some action could be tolerated if you were willing to meet it halfway (or wherever along the way) with beer. But I ran out of beer before I ran out of Godzilla 1998.
