Chicken population has gone from seven to three in the last month. I think we might have stumbled on a clue a few evenings ago.

We’re gonna need a bigger boat
Red Tailed hawk?
We have red-tailed hawks, falcons and golden eagles here.
One of our neighbors go a few chickens and a rooster.
Let them roam in their yard.
They didn’t last long.
I kept seeing a sign for fresh eggs, fresh chicken and fresh veggies a few streets over.
so I went by to see how they stay in business.
Looks like all their chickens are penned in really well.
I’ve seen red-tails and I don’t think this one was. I looked at some pictures and thought maybe prairie falcon, but the beak looked different. I’m not sure.
Forgot to mention, excellent photos!
Mrs. S took them. She probably walked up to 20 feet from it before it flew off. It was “fully invested” in tearing the hell out of that chicken.
Chicken had it commin’.
We all got it comin’
The Northern Goshawk.
…a juvenile.
20 feet is close enough for a shotgun. You should probably use a pen with a cover. I know some guys here that use a pen that is basically a giant cage with wheels under it. They move it around the yard when the grass starts to look too chewed up.
Good call, lauraw. The biology/bird guy down the hall told me the same.
