I’ve heard those tones before but didn’t know what they were called.
I saw it on an IMAX screen yesterday. It was the loudest movie I have ever watched. Not so much the sound effects, or the musical score (which I barely noticed) but this annoying deep bass noise that drowned out everything else for huge swaths of the film.
It made it hard to sit through the movie. It was like being stuck at a red light next to a car with a loud sound system for 90 minutes.
As far as the movie itself, I agree with most of John Podhoretz’s review:

That’s a pretty interesting review. Thanks for including it.

Yikes. I hope it’s not like that when I see it.
It may depend on the theater you go to. However, I’m not alone in thinking it was extremely loud:

“Actor Kenneth Branagh, who stars in the movie, said that about 30 veterans ― all of them in their mid-90s ― attended the U.K. premiere of the film. Speaking to late-night host Stephen Colbert, Branagh said the veterans praised the movie as being “exhilarating” and true-to-life, but said the film “was louder than the [real] battle.”
… but said the film “was louder than the [real] battle.
That right there is funny.
