…by taking more of your money and power and centralizing its control in the hands of even fewer people.

Bernie and his fans have no problem with this inherent contradiction. Reminds me of the Red Queen from Through the Looking Glass:

“Alice laughed. ‘There’s no use trying,’ she said. ‘One can’t believe impossible things.’

I daresay you haven’t had much practice,’ said the Queen. ‘When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.’

Through the Looking Glass reminds me of another penchant of liberals: constantly changing titles and definitions and adding concepts like code words and dog whistles in an effort to seize the lexical high ground.

“When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.”

“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.”

“The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master— that’s all.”

“It has never made sense to me…”

That kinda says is all.

Fin.

Indeed. Why just recently some lefty tweeted to me, questioning why I wasn’t willing to pay more in taxes for free healthcare. Yes. Just like that.

Anyone who can pose such an internally-contradictory question really ought not be engaged, and wasn’t.

Another one:

“The United States’ carbon dioxide emissions are too high! We have too many people generating too much CO2!”

“Open borders! Let’s increase our population by letting people from low-CO2 emitting countries into our country so they can increase their CO2 emissions!”

“Billionaires are unnecessary. Billionaires are evil. At some point you’ve made enough money.”

“Oh hey, Mike Bloomberg, you sure have a lot of cash. Why don’t you be the Democratic candidate?”

5. Mark in NJ - February 17, 2020

My new thing is, Bloomberg is the best candidate to take on Trump. My reasoning:

MB is on the correct side of the important issues

MB has a proven track record of LEGITIMATE business success and electoral/administrative accomplishments

MB has massive war chest…~$60B net worth…and willingness to spend

Whatever MB’s negatives are (stop & frisk, sexist comments), they’re not in the same ballpark as Trumps’s well-documented racism, misogyny, etc.

We keep hearing about Trump campaign’s mastery of IT and social media…that’s MB’s bread & butter!

One thing’s for sure – 2020 is gonna be brutal. Trump and/or his online army of 400lb-guys-on-their-beds will try to slime whomever the Dem candidate is, w/out regard for honesty, fairness, etc…Are any of the other candidates truly prepared for that?

Whatever MB’s negatives are (stop & frisk, sexist comments), they’re not in the same ballpark as Trumps’s well-documented racism, misogyny, etc.

Both have had comments taken out of context. I’ve never seen any evidence of Trump’s racism. Trump’s infamous “grab ’em by the *****” comment was taken as being sexually violent against women, when it was nothing of the sort. He was really saying that they are “gold-digging wh*res” /Bill Burr. That’s plenty objectionable, but I laughed atall the misplaced outrage.

Somewhat off topic, but I found the graphs interesting.

8. geoff - February 18, 2020

That second chart was a variant of The Chart – the chart that made me famous 11 years ago. Innocent Bystanders was the first to dig out the original predictions and then overlay the real numbers.

9. Bunk Strutts - February 18, 2020

geoff –

Your Chart(s) were what brought me here in the first place. Been lurking ever since.
In 2014 there was an unattributed graph illustrating the minimum wage vs, the poverty line. Thinking it was a load of Bloomberg, I ran my own numbers from the Dept. of Labor & Statistics, and the results surprised me.

https://tackyraccoons.com/2014/09/07/the-lies-about-minimum-wage/

(Of course, the true minimum wage is $0.)

Rock on wit yo bad sef.

10. Retired Geezer - February 18, 2020

geoff wuz robbed when they all stole his chart and published it without attribution.
Now he has his name embedded like a watermark.

11. Mark in NJ - February 18, 2020

Agree, Bill Burr is funny, including that comment

Regarding Trump’s racism, you gotta be kidding – examples that come to mind without even googling the subject: (1) 1973 DOJ lawsuit against Trump Management Co (or maybe that was only his father?); (2) full page ad against Central Park Five…and unwillingness to reconsider even after they were exonerated; (3) Obama birtherism ploy

12. geoff - February 18, 2020

1) 47 years old
2) Not racist.
3) Stupid, but not racist.

13. geoff - February 18, 2020

But maybe I’m just jaded. Everything has been racist for so long that I just don’t care anymore. Trump and Bloomberg are racist? So what? You’re racist, I’m racist: all white people (but only white people, of course) are irredeemably racist, no matter what they say or how they conduct their lives. 200 million racists who can’t ever perceive how racist they are, nor can they ever redeem themselves from their racism.

That’s what I’ve been hearing for the past 20 years, and it has rendered claims of racism impotent.

14. Mark in NJ - February 18, 2020

Fair enough…compared to how stuff (TV, movies, politics, sports, music, etc) was when we were growing up, it’s a different world…the only constant is that we’re all still racists 😀

15. Bunk Strutts - February 18, 2020

(Psst… the “birtherism” came from Hillary’s campaign via the Harvard pamphlet that listed B.O. as a Nigerian.)

16. lauraw - February 22, 2020

I believe Geoff meant 1) 27 years old. So, yeah, that lawsuit was about his father.

And everybody was horrified by the wilding happening in the late 80’s. The press was a willing participant in whipping public sentiment against minority kids who, to be absolutely fair, *were* rioting, robbing, and assaulting innocent people in the park. I don’t see any reason for Trump to be contrite about being a part of that media wave, so many years later, except to note that the ‘5’ were innocent of that one rape and battery for which they were unfairly convicted and imprisoned.

But even refusing to concede that all these years later doesn’t make him a racist. It makes him wrong. But that’s it. Unless you can read minds.

17. geoff - February 22, 2020

I believe Geoff meant 1) 27 years old.

Naw – I meant the story is almost a half-century old.

18. Sobek - February 24, 2020

Bunk, we’re all lurkers here. We have a group blog comprised entirely of lurkers.

And Geoff.
