Texas Wins Another Case Against Dept. of Commerce June 5, 2013

I met Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott last year at a luncheon, and had a chance to speak with him a bit.  He was just celebrating a successful case filed against the EPA.  I asked him “what is it that you spend most of your time on?”  and he answered “suing the Federal government.”

Loved that answer.  Here’s another one, successfully pushing back a stupid emergency ruling that arbitrarily shortened the red snapper fishing season in Federal waters off the coast of Texas.

Abbott understands federal bureacracies abuse their power constantly, and doesn’t back down from a fight.  The case he was celebrating was a ruling in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals that the EPA had improperly rejected the state’s “Flexible Permitting Program” regarding the establishment of controls over permits for electricity generation plants.  Texas wanted to keep control of permitting in our hands and not the EPA’s.  The EPA’s intention was to take it over and start denying applications.  It’s what they do.

Here’s a snippy NPR article about the outcome of that case.  Forget the typical NPR bullshit, look at the photograph of Greg Abbott in the article.

Greg Abbott is wheelchair bound.  Nice photo, isn’t it?

Incidentally, Texas was thrown into the provisions of the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule based on a model that showed a monitor located across the street from a steel mill, shows a theoretical reading that is slightly above attainment.

A monitor in Illinois.

Let’s be very clear about the facts.  The last-minute inclusion of Texas in the sulfur dioxide portion of the rule is based on modeling that says an Illinois monitor, located across the street from a steel mill, shows a theoretical reading that is slightly above attainment.  Actual data from 2009 forward shows that this monitor is meeting the federal air quality standards today.  And even if the feds relied on their own computer simulated modeling predictions, that monitor would be in attainment in 2014 without any reductions from CSAPR.  So does Texas’ tenuous link to this monitor justify the state’s inclusion in CSAPR? No.

He’ll run for governor soon.  I’ll support him.

I’m posting today because Moses threw up before dawn this morning, which means that I’m off work today on “Daddy Duty”.

But he wasn’t the only one who had a weird night.  I don’t know if it was that last slice of pizza I ate right before going to bed, or the fact that I watched the entire Season 3 of “Archer” collection on DVD while reading a compilation of Lovecraftian short stories over the weekend, but SOMETHING caused me to have a weird frickin’ dream last night. Especially if it’s a so-so steak.

I present to you, the Official Ryan Potter Highlight Mix Tape.

Mark my words, this kind of self-confidence is going to claw it’s way into middle management one day.  Or he’ll be the CEO.

“Wow” on this story. Just wow. Granted, haven’t really heard the other side’s story, but, holy cow. This 80-year-old man’s wife dies and police are searching his cupboards for her pain medication within ten minutes of her death. Someone needs firing if this is remotely close to what happened.

I came home from lunch Sunday and found my youngest son wearing a pair of these:

Youngest son: “Dad, check these out!”

Me: “Um, what are they?” (in my head, it sounded like WTF?)

Oldest son: “His gay shoes.”

Mom: “Hush!”

Youngest son: “They’re for running.”

Me, after a pause: “Like outside? You wear them in public?”

Youngest son: “Yeah, they’re good for circulation.”

He’s a diabetic, so circulation’s a big deal, but I kind of felt like he checkmated me with the circulation comment, because I was ready to give him a bad time on the goofy shoes. Apparently they’re kind of a big deal, but I’d never heard of them before yesterday.

I feel like I get older everytime I talk to that kid.

Do you know what I find offensive? Soccer moms, driving gigantic SUV’s (an Excursion to be exact) with “Support Our Troops” and “God Bless America” plastered on the back that are absolutely horrified at the prospect of their 18 year old daughter going out with one of those troops because they just aren’t the kind of people she wants around her daughter.

The kid met a girl that seemed absolute perfect for him. She likes hunting, country music and video games. She’s tall and athletic. Her Conservative parents are involved in the Tea Party, 2nd Amendment groups, charities and church. She even told him up front that she’s saving it for marriage which amazingly my 23 year old son has also been doing. The only problem he had with her was the age difference. They’d both be Freshmen in college this year, but he got delayed by that whole “fighting for freedom” thing. She seemed like she really liked him a lot and he liked her back. The funny thing is the fact that since both of those kids were raised right they’re honoring her mother’s wishes.

Apparently mom found out about their budding friendship, took one look at his “friends” on Facebook (almost all of them GI’s) and decided the age difference and his “friends” were just not going to fit into her daughter’s future. She supported the troops in theory, but apparently in reality she found them to be a bunch of foul mouth, drunken thugs that killed people for a living. All true, but that doesn’t make them bad people.

Brian is the best man I’ve ever known and he’s not good enough to be part of their family.  Utter bullshit.

Years ago my dad learned how to do these custom “thread jobs” on graphite fishing rods, using colored threads to make interesting patterns of cross-wrapping, attaching the eyes of the rod using the same thing, and affixing them with epoxy. He did it as a hobby first, and later as a side business. His goal was to make about $5000 in profits selling em to buy mom a new engagement ring for their 35th (I think) anniversary. They were beautiful pieces of work. He made way more than that, and it was a nice side bit of income for him for 15 years. I have a dozen of em still.  End to end, probably took about 15 hours to make each one.

A few years ago, he got bored and needed something to do, and started buying walking canes and doing the same thing to them. He must have made over 200 of them for the past 2 years. He’d take em to nursing homes, VA hospitals around Dallas, and give them away.

This is one of the 10 or so he gave me, he just asked me to do the same. So I handed out the others at the local VA, but kept this one. Had it for a year.

I never even thought I’d have to use it one day, but I have been. It’s kind of a special thing to me now, even though he passed away before it became something I needed, and not just something I wanted to hang on to.  Because he made it.

So it’s something special that reminds me of him, and is also helping me get well.

I think it might really be doing something to the water. Duchesne  County is a rural area of Utah that has experienced a bit of an oil boom. I’m not sure if “Mother of the Year–Chemical Dependency Division” voting has already taken place, but Duchesne County is going to be disproportionally represented. How about a quick parenting quiz in case any new parents out there are Googling for appropriate responses to life’s little challenges with children.

1. A 30-year-old man sends your 13-year-old daughter an iPhone so that she can take nude pictures of herself to send to him. You should

a. Call the Police

b. Take a picture of a Great Dane’s balls and send it to the man and then call the police

c. Smash the phone, mail it back, and then call the police

d. Help your daughter figure out the iPhone so you can get some nude pictures of her to send to a “very good friend of the family”

2. Your nine-year-old son is irritating you by cleaning your living room. You should show your irritation by

a. Not letting him clean anything else

b. Cleaning it yourself

c. Sending him outside for awhile

d. Pointing a loaded handgun at him and threatening to kill him

Pro-Parent Tip–The Ds aren’t appropriate. Rule of Thumb: If your actions are likely to cause people to wish God would send just one more cleansing flood, try to think of another option.

I went to Africa for a couple of months in the late 80s. I flew into Nairobi late at night and took a cab to a hotel that had been recommended by a friend. The room looked like you would imagine a low-end hotel in Nairobi would look–I don’t know, maybe you can imagine it, I don’t think I really could before seeing it. I would describe it as 1940s prison cell chic. I had packed a sheet and rolled up in it and stared at the ceiling while listening to the drunks in the alley below my window fight and piss. It was a long night. Two months later, when I was preparing to leave the continent, I returned to the same hotel for my last night before flying home. I was at ease and slept well. The hotel hadn’t changed, but my perspective on the necessities for comfort had.

So, what’s all this about? I’m guessing if the lady in this story ever finds a finger in her chili she will simply set it aside and finish her meal.

I guess it wasn’t a screw-up and Groupon is trying to be funny. Kind of weird. Nice sweater though.

I can see it, in your eyes I’m happy you know it.

I received my daily Email from Groupon (which I signed up for but routinely delete) and the subject line caught my attention and then weirded me out. I guess my natural response to being weirded out is to share it in hopes of giving others the skeevies. Enjoy:

He wasn’t a part of my “formative years”, but since “License to Ill” came out during my freshman year of college I did listen to the Beastie Boys a lot.

Based on this article, it seems that the cancer that he was battling in 2009 finally got the upper hand.  They weren’t musical geniuses, but they made fun music and they never seemed to take themselves too seriously.  About the only “social consciousness” issue I can remember about them is MCA’s involvement with the “Free Tibet” movement, which is a no-brainer anyway if you ask me.

Even if you don’t like their music, you still have to respect the group that made this song and video.
