States Should Lead The Fight Against Global Warming July 21, 2007

At least this proposal appeals to my strong bias towards federalism.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – States should develop creative approaches to climate change, just as they have with challenges such as health care, despite their different economic interests, governors said Saturday.

“No individual state is going to solve the climate change problem, but we can do our part,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty said. “In the absence of national or international consensus or progress, we have the opportunity to show the way.”

I like that — states do  tend to be more “creative” than the bureaucrats in Washington. In Gov. Pawlenty’s state of Minnesota, for example, they could creatively seek ways to address the global warming caused by the burps and farts emitted by their frickin’ dairy cattle.

Talks on state-level climate policy were planned for the annual National Governors Association meeting this weekend at a resort on Lake Michigan, where receding water levels have touched off debate over the effects of global warming on the Great Lakes.

Stephen Johnson, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, and the European Union’s environmental affairs counselor joined the discussion. The EPA has clashed with some states that are pushing for greater authority to regulate greenhouse gases, particularly automobile exhaust emissions.

“With the states taking action, even if you don’t have 100 percent of America, you can have 40 or 50 percent or more, and that’s a good start,” Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell said. “We can’t just wait around for the federal government.”

Great idea, Eddie. Your smoggy industrial state should get cracking on this issue. Try the punitive regulatory approach. That will get your polluting (and job-creating) businesses to move somewhere else like, erm, Ohio.

Now, I’m not saying that my own state of Ohio should not chip in. No sirree Bob. We Ohioans should be in the vanguard of the effort to save our planet.

I have an idea. We should do this by planting a gajillion acres of corn  to eat up those greenhouse gases and produce a renewable alternative energy source to replace fossil fuels.

Huh? You say we already did that?

Heh.  I guess we can relax.

I see we’re going to milk this thread for all its worth.

This cud lead to massive government intervention. Perhaps we should all chew on that a bit.

13. lauraw - July 23, 2007

As Michael alluded, those states are likely to suffer when local businesses stampede to greener pastures.

14. Dave in Texas - July 23, 2007

One time I tried to get 27 cows in a small barn but there wasn’t enough ruminant.

15. wiserbud - July 23, 2007

Since I’ve never lived on a farm, I really don’t get what their beef is.

16. wiserbud - July 23, 2007

dammit. sorry brew, tried to steal your line.

I should probably just steer clear of this thread altogether.

17. BrewFan - July 23, 2007

Looks like the Dairy industry might want to start a moovement against this heresy.

18. wiserbud - July 23, 2007

Ouch, Brew, that was like the worst joke I’ve heifer read.

19. Dausta - July 23, 2007

I’m not convinced that global warming is all that they are claiming it to be…. but then again, maybe the info that I’ve gotten is biased.

20. Cuffy Meigs - July 23, 2007

I don’t heiffer want to here about global warming again.

21. Cuffy Meigs - July 23, 2007

Easy does it, settle down, put your guns back in your holsteins.

22. wiserbud - July 23, 2007

I don’t put too much stock into what the Global Warming alarmists say. Seriously, I think they are all trying to buffalo us.

23. Cuffy Meigs - July 23, 2007

HAY! They may have a point, but your silage may vary.

24. Pupster - July 23, 2007

Global warming is a religion for the easily lead and gullibull.

25. BrewFan - July 23, 2007

Don’t we all have a steak in this issue, though?

26. Cuffy Meigs - July 23, 2007

All the arguments by the global warming folks are homogenized—just herd mentality.

27. Cuffy Meigs - July 23, 2007

wiserbud, I will not make a lactose joke.

28. wiserbud - July 23, 2007

I think they are skimming only the data that supports their whole premise. I doubt more that 2% of their information is correct.

29. Pupster - July 23, 2007

The data used in global warming arguments is specious and cowincidental.

30. BrewFan - July 23, 2007

Cow farts are only a drop in the bucket yet the environmentalist seem to regard this issue as a teat-for-tat opportunity.

31. BrewFan - July 23, 2007

wiserbud, I will not make a lactose joke.

I’m glad because I couldn’t tolerate it.

32. wiserbud - July 23, 2007

Seriously, this is all bull, and it tends to make me see red.

33. wiserbud - July 23, 2007

When it comes to facts versus fiction on this issue, sadly, we tend to really get only half and half.

34. BrewFan - July 23, 2007

I’d like to see a good round-up of all the data out there.

35. Cow - July 23, 2007

36. Cuffy Meigs - July 23, 2007

Do I believe in global warming? No. Thanks for oxen.

37. Cuffy Meigs - July 23, 2007

I’ve about had it with this topic—you’re gonna have to roll me outta here on a Guernsey.

38. lauraw - July 23, 2007

They say it’s about Global Warming, but it’s just another ploy to milk businesses of their profits- just another clash between the half-and-half nots.

39. lauraw - July 23, 2007

Cuffy, you have a rare talent. Well-done.

40. BrewFan - July 23, 2007

50. Michael - July 23, 2007

You people just don’t have the courage to face the facts about global warming. You’re all cowherds.

51. Michael - July 23, 2007

The states are going to have to calf up some serious money to fund these global warming programs.

52. Michael - July 23, 2007

And these jokes are about to make me calf up my lunch.

53. Pupster - July 23, 2007
