Have You Seen This Girl? September 27, 2007

Posted by Michael in Crime.

An older girl featured on a sex video, ten to twelve years old, was found. A younger girl, only four to five years old, is still at risk.

The part of the video showing the older girl was shot in Nye County, a rural county near Las Vegas, Boruchowitz [Nye County Sheriff’s Detective] said. Details were not disclosed, and no additional information about the identity of the girl or the circumstances of how she came to be on the video was made public. But Boruchowitz said investigators feared the younger girl was in danger. Sheriff’s detectives were also seeking a man whose image was seen on the video.

Boruchowitz earlier characterized a segment of the tape showing the older girl as “some kind of peep show” filmed from a different room. Investigators were examining whether parts of the tape showing the younger girl were filmed with the same video camera, he said. Video Watch authorities describe the disturbing case.

Still photos of the younger girl, fully clothed, have been widely broadcast.

Boruchowitz said the photos of the younger girl were being released because her life could be in danger.

1. nicedeb - September 27, 2007

Way to ruin my night, Michael.

No, I haven’t seen her, but I will pray for her.

2. Cathy - September 27, 2007

This story breaks my heart.

I can’t imagine — or more accurately — what I am imagining is a nightmare.

This little one is in my prayers.

3. pjmomma - September 27, 2007

I hate, hate, hate this! It makes me sick. It breaks my heart. I hate that there’s little babies out there I can’t take care of.

4. Michael - September 27, 2007

I remember being in my 20s, and I could read about stuff like this and it just did not resonate. It was something that happened, rarely, to other people.

Then I become a father, and stories like this started to drive me crazy. You can’t help but personalize it. You can’t help but think, what if that was my girl.

I’m with you, PJ. I just hate shit like this. It makes me angry. It makes me want to shoot someone, to be frank. Just shoot them down like rabid dogs.

5. Michael - September 27, 2007

I say this, by the way, with full awareness of the data — virtually all such offenders were themselves the victims of childhood sexual abuse. They have tragic stories of their own. They are literally unable to help themselves, and desperately need help.

Still, if you gave me a clean shot and a plausible escape route with a guy like that, I would put him down without a moment of hesitation or a minute of remorse.

6. daveintexas - September 27, 2007

dangerous animal Michael.

it’s what you have to do.

we all cried over Old Yeller. I did. It’s still what you have to do.

7. pjmomma - September 27, 2007

Not everyone who’s been molested becomes a molester though. There’s a special kind of sickness there. I have no sympathy.

We spend our lives reacting to our childhood situations and I think that as soon as you realize you’re reacting to your childhood and you’re blaming others for your behaviour, it’s time to take repsonsibility for your behaviours

Ugh, I’m sorry. This story has me so upset from when I saw it on Fox yesterday. I’m glad you’re posting about it. The more people see her little face the better.

I have a 5 year old girl and we used to live very close to where the van dam’s lived in san diego and that story ripped my heart out.

8. lauraw - September 27, 2007

Kill it.

I remember a news story -think it was about that guy who killed the Van Damme (sp?) girl, that he had a video in his possession which featured a toddler being gang raped by a circle of chuckling men.

Who is she? What happened to her? Does anyone know? Are the police investigating her case?

Story didn’t say.

Kill them all.

9. pjmomma - September 27, 2007

he’s on death row. it was her neighbor that she and her mother had sold girl scout cookies to the day earlier. The cops had actually pulled over his motorhome for other reasons and she was in it, but they didn’t know it. Just like Polly Klaas.

I don’t know what the media’s problem was, but they played the audio of that video you’re talking about and it made me physically ill. I have never, ever heard anything so bone-chilling in my life and I hope I never do again.

Uh, lauraw? were you talking about the van dam case?

10. lauraw - September 27, 2007

I believe so- but I thought it was a video of that happening to some other kid, that he had in his arsenal of child pornography.

11. Bart - September 27, 2007

The problem is that cops are lousy at doing actual police work, i.e. solving crimes. The only criminals they catch are the stupid ones and the ones who want to be caught.

12. lauraw - September 27, 2007

You would probably make a decent detective, Bart.

13. Bart - September 27, 2007

Is there where I’m supposed to say, “Yeah, I always get my man?”

14. fadia - September 27, 2007

The images of this girl have kept me awake all night. I cannot get her face out of my mind. I pray that she is brought to safety very soon. She is close to my daughters age. I wish i could protect her and promise her that no one will ever hurt her again. I don’t understand how any human can hurt a child in such a way.

15. Speirs - September 27, 2007

Unfortunately, we live in a world where money talks. This story has received so much publicity somebody out there listening definitely knows something. I think a reward fund should be started for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator. I’m willing to pitch in the first $1,000. It’s not much but combined with donations from others it could add up pretty fast. I realize there are thousands of other victims out there suffering from similar abuse and you can’t just lay a reward out there for everyone. However, there’s way too much hard evidence in this particular incident to lump it in with all the other bad things that happen out there and let it go. I’m a religious person and like many of you will include her in my prayers. But I’m also willing to take the next step. Anyone in?

16. lauraw - September 27, 2007

No, look: I’ve seen some amazingly lousy cops. Drunk cops, stoned cops, crooked cops. ‘Course, this was in Hartford, where the official policy is to recruit from the mug books and pay bottom dollar.

The detectives are usually pretty good, but there just aren’t enough of them. Bothers me to hear you throwing bad cabbages at the thin blue line.

17. sandy burger - September 27, 2007

I bet the perpetrator has a record.

18. Michael - September 28, 2007

We spend our lives reacting to our childhood situations and I think that as soon as you realize you’re reacting to your childhood and you’re blaming others for your behaviour, it’s time to take repsonsibility for your behaviours

PJ, you just captured my personal definition of what it means to be an “adult.” That was one of the most mature and perceptive comments I’ve seen on this site.

Now, you need to work on how to spell “behavior” and “responsibility.”

19. Bart - September 28, 2007

OMG, pj is a canadian?

20. Michael - September 28, 2007

If that’s true, my planned war on Canada is screwed. She’s probably tipped off the authorities.

21. geoff - September 28, 2007

My wife mocks me for my paranoia where our kids are concerned, and I do feel badly that I don’t let them walk more than a block from the house, or play outside of our yard, or cross the street without asking. When I was 11, I roamed the neighborhood freely and independently, but in these sorry times I never let my son or daughter out of my sight.

I know they have to grow up and develop independence, and I know that these incidents are actually rare. But situations like this are so horrible that I can’t loosen my grip. And the perpetrators are, to my mind, beyond redemption, regardless of what root causes may have driven them to these acts.

As DinTx said, it wasn’t Old Yeller’s fault he had to be put down, but he had to be put down.

22. eddiebear - September 28, 2007

I saw this tonight on Nancy Grace as I was preparing to take my daughter to the park. What kills me is that this little one is in this spot in the first place. How did she wind up in the clutches of a creep as was pictured on the NG show is what really sickens me.

23. eddiebear - September 28, 2007

Why did the guy who had the tape wait so long before he gave it to the cops? Why did he show it to others? And he claims he found it in the desert, yet it appears to be undmage? C’mon! My bullshit detector is redlining on this guy and his involvement. I talked to my cop uncle tonight for something unrelated, but this came up, and he mentioned that cops want to get the perps on stuff like this and have a few minutes “off camera” with the guy.

I have trouble sleeping as it is, but seeing this on Nancy Grace tonight has caused me to stay up, lest I lay in bed unable to sleep. It’s shit like this and other examples of just unspeakeable sickness that sometimes make me want to pull a Travis Bickle on society.

24. eddiebear - September 28, 2007

I’m sorry. I don’t want to hog a thread, but this story has disturbed me so deep I cannot even really even begin to fathom cruelty such as this.

25. Wickedpinto - September 28, 2007

I know nothing about this girl, however, I must make a small political statement.

If Most abused children become abusers, why is it that homosexuality is EXCLUSIVELY genetic as the liars like to say?

My guess? is that the homo’s are liars, I know homo’s and I don’t judge them for their actions, as long as they are with adults, but I also challenge them for their . . . “not choice (wickedpinto) it wasn’t a “choice” one particular gay explained. “I’m gay, and I don’t regret it, but don’t say it was a choice.”

Some gays MIGHT be born with a powerful predilection that can’t be ignored, but, based on my interaction with numerous gays (I’ve known a lot of gay people) what they have told me tells me that they were guided towards homosexuality.

Pedophiles should be killed, so that there aren’t any more options for “nurture” expansion, but why is it that people who have been taught to love children, are incurrable, and MADE, while homosexuals, are BORN exactly as they are?

I have no problem with non-problematic homosexual lifestyles (I oppose parenthood) but the lies of the left, and the idiot activists are infuriating.

Outside of the gay thing,

I once heard a man say, In my contry, it isn’t uncommon to nurse a child by a man, with his penis, when the mother isn’t available.”

He was a black man, but it’s not racist, it’s disgusting.

The fags and lesbo’s let them bread themselves out of existence, if it’s “genetic.”

26. TattooedIntellectual - September 28, 2007

The last time I looked at the research (which it’s kinda difficult to find fairly unbiased research, and it’s been a few years) the thought was that homosexuality was, like so many things, nature AND enviro. There is a genetic predisposition toward homosexuality, and that the enviro can be the determining factor one way or another. Now, given the complexity that is a human, it’s entirely possible that some people do not have the genetic predisposition but do “chose” homosexuality be it consciously or subconsciously.

As an interesting aside, there is a strong correlation between left handedness in men and homosexuality. The relationship falls apart when applied to women.

27. TattooedIntellectual - September 28, 2007

26. Wickedpinto – September 28, 2007

The fags and lesbo’s let them bread themselves out of existence, if it’s “genetic.”

Even if there was a single homosexual gene and you were dealing w/ simple Mendelian genetics (AA-dominant, Aa-heterozygote, aa-recessive), and assuming complete expression of the gene, it would never completely vanish, there would always be heterozygotes (Aa) that were carriers.

28. Wickedpinto - September 28, 2007

Okay Tattooed,

That completely disproves the absolute acceptance of “they were born that way” argument.

I’m not saying their aren’t predilections bread into homosexuality, but only that it’s a false premise that it’s exclusive.

Have we managed to isolate the baby fucking gene?
Or is that all nurture, unlike the assraming, or taco dinner gene?

29. Wickedpinto - September 28, 2007

BTW, I have 14 gay blogs in my “favorites” and I am always a supporter of the individuals, while simultaneously being a “skeptic” / rotten and argumentative prick, when it comes to the genetic only methodology.

I prefer a mix of the “fundamentaly bisexual, with natural tendency’s” concept.

30. TattooedIntellectual - September 28, 2007

Yeah, WP–the problem is most things in humans are genetics + enviro, and rarely just one or the other. Alcoholics=genetic predisposition + environmental trigger, no trigger=no alcoholic, bipolar=genetic predisposition + environmental trigger, etc..

The pedophelia thing is very weird to me. From a biological perspective it’s an evolutionary dead end to desire sex w/ children who have not yet gone thru puberty. No puberty=no baby making ability=no passing on genes to the next generation. The ones that go after young teens make a bit more sense in that perspective b/c at least in that instance the teen (usually) has reproductive ability. And to be honest, 18 is a bit of an arbitrary age limit that we’ve only set recently. I don’t know of any studies (doesn’t mean they aren’t out there-just that I haven’t really looked) into the motivations driving pedophiles.

31. Wickedpinto - September 28, 2007

Well, pedophilia, is documented in the Koran, and while I would be HAPPY to bash Islam, cuz I think Islam is fundamentaly retarded, the actual practices weren’t THAT uncommon at the time.

Or before it.

I mean really as recently as the 17th century (thats when bill shakes was writing right?) the taming of the shrew, while not about an adolescent, or a pre-adolescent, women were still chattel, and the story is about how HE was strong enough to tame a much younger woman, who was promised to him for money.

so I think, that IN GENERAL pedophilia, wasn’t that uncommon, in the women as property, in fact, a NEGATIVE property, what with the dowery promise. “Pay me to take advantage of your stupid child,” misogyny of years past, however, even in the pre-pubescent promises of western culture, and in fact, even in fucking ROME, and GREECE, taking a young man, or woman, before they were ready was the greatest of crime.

I don’t think there is a 9 year old as muhammed took, not just as wife, but “took” as in “broke the bitch” sorta violation, that could have been accepted by any culture, as openly as muhhamed accepted.

I really do think islam is evil. I’ve said it to “reformed” blacks, and thinking about it now? I might start working out again, so that my waiste is 33″ rather than 34″ , and my arms are larger, and my anger is more forthright.

But that will lead me to an early death, as well as others.

I will hold out till my mother passes, and I hope she never does, before I get those balls again.

32. TattooedIntellectual - September 28, 2007

Okay, I’m gonna run w/ what I gathered from that 🙂 Yep, pedophelia’s been around a long time. It would be interesting to look at it’s presence/absence in chimps and other monkeys–> is it something that humans “invented”?

33. Lurlene - September 28, 2007

Could this be the same little girl named Reachelle Smith that is missing?
Can someone pass this on . I came across her picture today. How sad .I am also praying . Dear God, please help us find these little ones.

34. pjmomma - September 28, 2007

haha, I’m not Canadian. I just hang out in pubs too often.
responsibility behavior
responsibility behavior
responsibility behavior
responsibility behavior
responsibility behavior
There, I wrote them each 5 times as punishment and said 4 Our Fathers and 3 Hail Mary’s even though responsibility was a typo. I take responsibility for the misspelling.

35. pjmomma - September 28, 2007

Yes LauraW he had a ginormous arsenal. Hundreds of thousands of child pron images. The audio we heard was just one in his collection, not of the girl.

36. lauraw - September 28, 2007

I like your avatar, pjm. It has a certain something.

37. kevlarchick - September 28, 2007

pjm, I’ll say the Prayer to St. Michael and ask him to descend with his mighty sword and carve out the entrails of the fuckers who hurt babies. I’ll help him with my own blade.

38. Dave in Texas - September 28, 2007

I heard you had one of those KC. Remind me not to piss you off at the IBSBP.

39. nicedeb - September 28, 2007

I said a prayer to St. Michael, too.

But my prayer didn’t go into as much detail as yours.

40. pjmomma - September 28, 2007

Thank you Kevlarchick. Can you tell this is a sensitive subject? ugh

Oh and that’s my eyeball lauraw. nothing else I did showed up so I stuck my eye in my webcam and clicked.

41. lauraw - September 28, 2007

I have to keep glancing at it. It refuses to turn invisible like other avatars.

42. Dave in Texas - September 28, 2007

It’s the eye in the sky, looking at yooooo-ooooo, it can read your mind.

APP was an underappreciated artist.

43. Bart - September 28, 2007

I think we should all have our eye as an avatar.

Or a hand.

44. T - September 28, 2007

Am I missing something? They have ID’ed the other girl in the video in the other room and she does not know who this man is in the other room? Or are they saying that the 2 video shoots are from completely different times, places, cameras?

Pray for this little one that she has been released from her nightmare. And God help this monster that has preyed upon her. It is hard to accept that there are more and more psychopathological vessels of the devil running free on this earth. The thought of someone doing something so depraved just shakes you to the core.

45. Russ from Winterset - September 28, 2007

The Iowa Supreme Court just released a ruling about a pedophile’s constitutional right to confront his accuser.

So if you happen to be a man accused of molesting a child and your brother kidnaps, molests and kills that little girl before your trial – you can bar the state from using her videotaped statement in your trial for her molestation? I’m sorry, but that’s fucked.

The most probable solution to this problem would be for the state to make it’s case without the videotape, but in case that doesn’t happen, there’s still a chance that this maggot will die in prison. He’s also got a trial for possession of kiddie porn pending, and the judge in that case could sentence him to the maximum for EACH piece of porn in his collection. Considering the fact that these fucks typically have thousands of images in their collections, even a sentence of six months for each piece of kiddie porn in his possession (served consecutively – is that term right Mike/Sobek? I think consecutively is back to back to back while concurrently is simultaneously) would keep this parasite in jail for ten or twelve lifetimes.

Of course, “convict justice” could make this legal wrangling unnecessary, but I always feel conflicted relying on murderers, rapists and armed robbers to administer justice for society.

46. pjmomma - September 28, 2007

They have ID’ed the other girl in the video in the other room and she does not know who this man is in the other room

I was confused by this as well. The part that gets me is, where’s the mother? I don’t see anyone mentioning her as a missing child. No parent coming forward to say that’s mine. Is the mommy involved in this as well. That hurts.

47. Sobek - September 28, 2007

“is that term right Mike/Sobek?”

48. Sobek - September 28, 2007

I’m skimming through the Iowa decision now, Russ, and it looks like the Supremes got the decision right, however much I might hate the result. The question is whether the video-taped statements are “testimony,” and it’s pretty much impossible to deny that they are.

One possible solution is to have a defense attorney available for this kind of psychological examination, but that might create an even worse result — can you imagine a little kid trying to tell a psychiatrist about repeated molestation while an unfriendly defense attorney cross-examines her under oath?

Another possibility is to dissociate the police from the examination. Here, the witness was told that the police were watching, the whole examination was conducted with police participation, and the officer suggested some of the questions for the witness. The Iowa court expressly reserved the question of whether such an examination would be admissible.

I will say, the federal rules of evidence let statements in where the defendant “procured” the witness’ unavailability. In other words, if this guy arranged for his brother to murder the girl, then he cannot complain that he can’t cross examine her. But there’s nothing in the story, or in the decision, that suggests the defendant procured unavailability.

Final, only barely-realted note: the Iowa Supreme Court quoted from John Marshall’s opinion in the Aaron Burr trial.

49. Russ from Winterset - September 28, 2007

Sobek, I agree on the constitutional interpretation, but it still sucks.

I think this case exemplifies the concept of “tough cases make bad law”, and it’s almost a sure bet that someone with a tenuous grasp on the meaning of the constitution will introduce a bill to allow an exception for child molestation cases in the next session of the legislature.

50. Russ from Winterset - September 28, 2007

My idea for consecutive sentences comes from a case that happened back when I was a freshman in college. The Iowa State Dormitory system had a prohibition on throwing things out of your dorm window, with a $100 fine being assessed if you were caught. Some guy from another floor got mad during a poker game & threw the deck of cards out the window. Unfortunately, the Hall Advisor was walking up to the front door at the time, and she saw him look out the window after the deck came out.

The “defendant” was brought up on charges in front of the Richardson Court Association student/staff discipline board, and he made the mistake of lipping off to the board & copping the attitude of “Hey, it was a deck of cards, not an anvil. Nobody was gonna get hurt!” He made some other dumbass comments about a kangaroo court, and tried to link his throwing the cards out the window to some sort of crap about constitutionally protected speech or the Boston Tea Party or some sort of bullshit like that. I don’t know, the guy who was on the board & told me the story didn’t remember exactly what the moron said, he just remembered that he branded himself as an asshole to the board.

The board asked one of the guys who had been playing cards with him what game was being played at the time. “Five Card Draw”, was the answer, and then they asked if they were playing “jokers wild” (they were). The board retired to a meeting room for five minutes and came back with a fine of $5400. One hundred dollars per card, including the two jokers. When the moron said “Hell, that’s more than a year’s tuition. I can’t afford that fine.”, he was told that he had an alternative: find a new place to live within two weeks.

Good riddance. I never really got to know him, but just from riding the elevator a few times with him I could tell he was an asshole (I’m gifted like that, I guess). I ran into him again senior year at a party thrown by the men’s gymnastics team, and recognized him. He didn’t think my asking “Hey, I remember you from Larch Hall. You wanna play some cards?” was very funny, but what do I care if an asshole thinks I’m funny or not?

51. Sobek - September 28, 2007

“Sobek, I agree on the constitutional interpretation, but it still sucks.”

Yep. The only bright side is that the legal system that protects bastards like that piece of crap will also protect me (probably).

52. pjmomma - September 28, 2007

The police say she’s with family and she’s safe.

53. Bart - September 28, 2007

That’s great news.

So was it a family member?

54. Cathy - September 28, 2007

Such Great News!
Thanks PJmomma!

55. pjmomma - September 28, 2007

As typical there’s not a lot of details…..but they said that guy is still on the loose.

56. Wickedpinto - September 28, 2007

all sentence’s should be consecutive.

I at first thought the “concurrent”/”consecutive” thing was a broad generalization, depicting weak efforts, by the lawmakers.

It proves that there are too many fucking laws.

How THE HELL!!! can this be a government of for and by, only to finaly realize that the laws are so convoluted that they are trapped no matter the crime?

If the people CAN’T know the laws, thats why lawyers make so much money, then the laws are SCREWED!

The idea that our laws, and our government are built on the ideals of the people is WHY we allow individuals to represent themselves.

If the laws are so ridiculously confused, that a normal person can’t represent themselves, then there is a problem with our LAWS!!! enacted by CONGRESS!!!

58. nicedeb - September 28, 2007

Eh, the spam bucket took by comment because it was just the url for the story. I just saw it and came here right away to see if you guys had seen it:

59. nicedeb - September 28, 2007

She’s seven years old now.

60. nicedeb - September 28, 2007

LAS VEGAS — A young girl who was seen being sexually assaulted in a homemade videotape has been found and is safe with relatives and sheriff’s officials, authorities said Friday.

“She looks like a very happy 7-year-old girl,” Nye County sheriff’s Detective David Boruchowitz said at a news conference late Friday. She was 3 when the tape was made, he said.

Chester Arthur Stiles, who was previously being sought for questioning, is now considered a suspect but remains at large, Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo said.

Stiles has tenuous ties to the family through friends, Boruchowitz said.

The crime took place in Las Vegas, where the girl was found, DeMeo said. The girl’s mother recognized furniture and a television from scenes in the videotape, and she was cooperating with the investigation, he said.

“The mother was not aware of anything that went on with this young girl,” he said.

Widespread media accounts of the case led to the crucial tip that helped find the girl, Boruchowitz said. Volunteers screened 4,000 to 5,000 tips that came in from across the country and around the world, DeMeo said.

Police released information they would not normally release in such crimes, such as a photograph of the girl, DeMeo said.

“We sat down … and said, ‘You know what? We have nothing else,'” he said.

Earlier in the day, authorities gave to the media a first name for the girl, whose haunting face could be seen in the video in which she was raped and sexually assaulted.

61. Cathy - September 28, 2007

Wow! This is great.

I’m a bit confused about what happened when, and where this little lady has been for the past few years.

I hope the rest of those details come to the surface, but it’s not as important as the news that she is now safe and sound. Awesome.

62. Bart - September 29, 2007

So is this Stiles person a relative, or a friend of the family?

63. nicedeb - September 29, 2007

Kathy, the spam bucket took my link, that’s why I pasted most of the story, but if you could retrieve it, that would be great, because I didn’t post the whole thing.

64. Cathy - September 29, 2007

NiceDeb — Your information is great. Sorry. I didn’t intend to imply that there was anything missing from it..

I’m confused about what is currently being reported by the media and authorities. I hope we learn more.

65. Cathy - September 29, 2007

Bart — I clipped this from the CNN story. Hope it helps answer your questions.

Stiles is not related to the girl, but had a “several-tiered friend connection” with her family, Boruchowitz said.

66. Bart - September 29, 2007

Thanks, Cathy.

I was wondering who had access to the girl where she could be so easily taken. Most often it is family, friends, or a neighbor.

67. lauraw - September 29, 2007

“The mother was not aware of anything that went on with this young girl,” he said.

How can that be?

Anyway. What a relief. Thanks for the update PJM.

68. daveintexas - September 29, 2007

I yanked em outta the skimmer deb. Thanks for updating this thing y’all.

I have a very dark place in my soul right now over this though. Ugly. I want to hurt somebody and I want to hurt em bad.

69. Pupster - September 29, 2007

I just posted the story on the main page, y’all are pretty quick on the draw.

70. pjmomma - September 29, 2007

“The mother was not aware of anything that went on with this young girl,” he said.

How can that be?

I know, that bugs me too. Why would you let a friend of a friend of a friend take your baby girl and a dude at that? No offense to the fine gentleman on this blog.

I don’t really have to watch my kids that well because they’re tied up together in the middle of the living room.

71. Pupster - September 29, 2007

I hope you put down a tarp first.

72. pjmomma - September 29, 2007

Of course there’s a tarp! I’m not cruel.

73. Michael - September 29, 2007

Why would you let a friend of a friend of a friend take your baby girl and a dude at that? No offense to the fine gentleman on this blog.

No offense taken. You don’t turn your kids over to a stranger. Period.

74. Meggie - May 17, 2008

Oh god, i believe it is Reachelle Smith! Come home sweet one.
